In celebration of Latino Conservation Week and the one-year anniversary of the reopening of Big Basin. Saved By Nature in collaboration with GreenLatinos, CA State Parks, Parks California and Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks will host a hike on July 22nd from 10AM – 2PM! There will be fun for the entire family including an educational guided hike, activities, food, and refreshments! Stop by partner tables for free give-a-ways and to learn more about local fish species, conservation efforts, and The Reimagining of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The guided redwood hike is also available in Spanish.

We will work for approximately one hour and then we will embark on an urban forest guided nature walk with Ed Dominguez, Lead Naturalist, at the Seward Park Audubon Society. Join our trek through the fields and forest at Seward Park as we tune in to migrating and resident birds and bring them into view as the opportunity allows. Lead mushroom enthusiast Daniel Lopez will demonstrate how to grow your own mushrooms. Paint a bird house, play some games, and check out our table of community resources. Enjoy free tacos and music with our community!

Guía del Canal C & O en barco

Sea Slug Scavenger Hunt

The Sea Slug Scavenger Hunt is a hands-on learning program at the tidepools of southern California. In 2023, we will be hosting the program at Cabrillo Beach in Los Angeles County. Our multilingual team will teach participants about sea slugs and other marine organisms, followed by time to explore the tidepools. Our programs will be hosted in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese.

Niki Lopez Afro-Latina, Lesbian interdisciplinary visual artist, curator, social practitioner and award-winning designer. Known for her vibrant color palette, avant-garde exhibitions, masks, and a collection of works dealing with traumas and healing through the arts inspiring the creation of the transformative arts movement "What’s Your Elephant®" - which uses the arts to address the unspoken.

Lopez's recent mixed-media reliefs incorporate masks and mask elements exemplifying components of her meditative journey towards Afrocentric spirituality, self-discovery, reflection, healing, restoration, and social justice. Exploring various media, intuitive mark-making, and free-flowing strokes, her work evokes a sense of movement, and energy.

Lopez's contributions to the arts were recognized with a 2021 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow nomination and the 2020 Broward County’s Arts & Culture Visionaries Award by ArtServe. Her philanthropic actions include donating works to support various causes such as the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center, HRC-Human Rights Campaign, and Equality Florida.

Natalia works as a visual artist and holistic practitioner. In 2017 she created Heart in Brain Studios as a nurturing space to explore internal landscapes through the visual arts and energy-based practices. Natalia serves as the interpreter for the Hispanic Access Foundation and is a trainer for the Goldie Hawn Foundation's MindUP Life program.

Juan Guillermo Sánchez Martínez was born in Bakatá/Bogotá, in the Colombian Andes. He coordinates the online multilingual anthology and exhibition Siwar Mayu, A River of Hummingbirds. He has published the following books of poetry: Uranio (2023), Bejuco (2021), Salvia (2014), Río (2010), and Altamar, awarded with the National Prize in Colombia in 2016 (University of Antioquia). In 2019, he co-edited the volume Muyurina y el presente profundo with quechua writer Fredy Roncalla (Pakarina/Hawansuyo), and he is currently co-editing Abiayalan Pluriverses. Bridging Indigenous Studies and Hispanic Studies with Gloria E. Chacón and Lauren Beck (Amherst College, 2023). He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Indigenous Learning at Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, Canada).

Daniel Correa immigrated to the United States from Colombia when he was a kid with his family. He grew up in New Jersey for the majority of his life. Ever since he was a kid, Daniel has always been fascinated by the natural world and the outdoors; in part thanks to his parents taking him to the local urban parks and family camping trips. His curiosity and interest in nature led him to a B.A. in Environmental Science with a minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Daniel has used his college degree, and his passion for the environment to pursue a career in wetland habitat restoration and environmental education. He has worked on various restoration and conservation projects in the East and West Coast with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Americorps, and most recently with the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District.

Metztli López Torres was born in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz on May 7, 1984. Metztli completed a degree in Social Anthropology at the Universidad Veracruzana and a Master's in Social Anthropology by CIESAS-Gulf. During this time Metztli studied subjects related to pregnancy, women's health, gender violence, and feminism. She focused her attention on studying with traditional midwives from the Xalapa-Coatepec area and rescuing traditional knowledge regarding women's health care. During this time she trained as a birth doula and educator in preparation for childbirth.

In the spring of 2012 Metztli founded her business called Luna Mamá focused on providing education around pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum from a natural perspective, as well as educating mothers on issues related to attachment parenting. In 2014 Metztli moved to the United States with her family and by 2019 she restarted her business, now called Luna Mama Services, Inc. where she has dedicated herself to bringing knowledge of Traditional Mexican Medicine and Traditional Midwifery to Chicana women, migrants, and the community in general.

Metztli currently continues her business as a birth attendant, educator in lactation, specialist in traditional Mexican postpartum, sobadora, and uterus healer.

Metztli López Torres nació en la ciudad de Xalapa, Veracruz el 7 de mayo de 1984. Metztli cursó la licenciatura en Antropología Social en la Universidad Veracruzana y la Maestría en Antropología Social por el CIESAS- Golfo. Durante este tiempo Metztli estudió temas relacionados con el embarazo, salud de las mujeres, violencia de género y feminismo. Así mismo enfocó su atención en estudiar con parteras tradicionales del área Xalapa-Coatepec y rescatar conocimiento tradicionales respecto al cuidado de la salud de la mujer. Durante este tiempo ella se formó como doula de parto y educadora en preparación para el parto

En la primavera del 2012 Metztli fundó su negocio llamado Luna Mamá enfocado en proporcionar educación alrededor del embarazo, parto y postparto desde una perspectiva natural así como educar a las madres en temas relacionados con la crianza con apego. En el 2014 Metztli se mudó a los Estados Unidos con su familia y para el 2019 reinició su negocio ahora llamado Luna Mama Services, Inc. en donde se ha dedicado a acercar el conocimiento de la Medicina Tradicional Mexicana y la Partería Tradicional a las mujeres chicanas, migrantes, así como a la comunidad en general.

Metztli actualmente continúa con su negocio como acompañante del parto, educadora en lactancia, especialista en postparto tradicional Mexicano, sobadora y sanadora del útero.

Metztli López Torres was born in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz on May 7, 1984. Metztli completed a degree in Social Anthropology at the Universidad Veracruzana and a Master's in Social Anthropology by CIESAS-Gulf. During this time Metztli studied subjects related to pregnancy, women's health, gender violence, and feminism. She focused her attention on studying with traditional midwives from the Xalapa-Coatepec area and rescuing traditional knowledge regarding women's health care. During this time she trained as a birth doula and educator in preparation for childbirth.

In the spring of 2012 Metztli founded her business called Luna Mamá focused on providing education around pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum from a natural perspective, as well as educating mothers on issues related to attachment parenting. In 2014 Metztli moved to the United States with her family and by 2019 she restarted her business, now called Luna Mama Services, Inc. where she has dedicated herself to bringing knowledge of Traditional Mexican Medicine and Traditional Midwifery to Chicana women, migrants, and the community in general.

Metztli currently continues her business as a birth attendant, educator in lactation, specialist in traditional Mexican postpartum, sobadora, and uterus healer.

Natalia works as a visual artist and holistic practitioner. In 2017 she created Heart in Brain Studios as a nurturing space to explore internal landscapes through the visual arts and energy-based practices. Natalia serves as the interpreter for the Hispanic Access Foundation and is a trainer for the Goldie Hawn Foundation's MindUP Life program.

Her leadership is backed by an understanding of what it means to take care of our place, be good stewards, and foster community. Join us as we kick off LCW! Learn about the environmental history of the Santa Cruz River in Tucson, AZ; the monsoons, the flora and fauna, and more! Ride in community and learn about water in the Sonoran Desert on your bicycle! Make seed bombs, get the blood pumping, celebrate Latino Conservation Week, drink Agua Frescas, and get to know the wildlife living along the Santa Cruz River and Sweetwater Wetlands. If you need a bike reserve one courtesy of FUGA!

We will meet up at the City of Tucson Ward 1 Council Office starting at 7:45am. We will head out by 8:15 and make our first stop at the Santa Cruz River Heritage Project the https://www.tucsonaz.gov/Departments/Water/Water-Projects-Programs/Water-Arts-and-Culture/The-Santa-Cruz-River-Heritage-Project, then we are off to the SweetWater Wetlands, and finally back to the Ward 1 Office. We will have plenty of ice water on hand and support from FUGA and other teams.

Please be prepared to ride 10 miles roundtrip, be sun ready with sun block, a water bottle, a hat and sunglasses and spread the word! Nos vemos this Sunday morning... Happy Latino Conservation Week!

¡Vamos Afuera en Zion National Park! "Lets go outside at Zion National Park!"

Join Zion National Park on July 22nd, 2023, for their very first Latino Conservation Week event!

Zion National Park is excited to invite you and your family to celebrate Latino Conservation Week with us for the first time. We will be offering a morning guided hike and traditional cultural activities in the afternoon. Our goal of these events is to embrace and enjoy nature while acknowledging the significance of Latinos in conservation and recreation.

Schedule:

9am – Meet at the South Campground Ampitheater in Zion National Park

Bring your own coffee and have cafecito with rangers and interns, prepare for the hike, and hear our welcome to Zion’s Latino Conservation Week.

9:30am - Hike begins on the Pa’rus trail, leaving from South Campground Amphitheater

The hike will be approximately 2 miles long and will take around 1.5 hrs. The Pa’rus trail is a flat, paved walk next to the virgin river. It is wheelchair accessible, bike and dog friendly, and considered an easy hike. It will be hot, and there will not be much shade cover. Please, plan accordingly and wear comfortable shoes, cool clothes, a hat, and sunscreen.

LUNCH – After the hike, there will be a break for lunch. Participants can bring their own lunch and are welcome to eat on the lawn at the nature center or explore the rest of the park. Food concessions are offered at the Zion Lodge, or in Springdale.

1pm-4pm – Activities at the Nature Center

Activity tables by our Latino Heritage Internship Program and Greening Youth interns. Come enjoy activities for the whole family and learn about the cultural research our interns are doing. Participants can expect loteria, mural, and mapping activities that will be set out on the lawn next to the Nature Center.

Information:

Locations: The South Campground Amphitheater is accessible from the Nature Center Parking Lot, which is the second turn to the right after entering the park from the south entrance, or from walking up the Pa'rus trail from the Visitor Center.

The Nature Center is located in-between the Museum (shuttle stop 2) and the Visitor Center (shuttle stop 1), and is right next to the South Campground. It is accessible from the Nature Center parking lot, which is the second right turn after entering from the South Entrance or walking up the Pa'rus trail from the visitor center about 10 minutes.

Parking: There is usually parking spaces at the Nature Center parking lot before 9am. It is highly recommended to enter the park before 9am to find the best parking and to avoid traffic to enter the park. Other parking options in the park include the Visitor Center parking lot and pull outs along the road (if all four tires are on pavement and the car is not in the street). If parking in the park is full, there is parking in the town of Springdale, visitors can use the Springdale shuttle to get to the park entrance.

What to Bring: Plenty of water, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, cool clothing, food or snacks, and the whole family!

Estaremos ofreciendo una caminata guiada por la mañana y actividades culturales tradicionales por la tarde. Nuestro objetivo de estos eventos es disfrutar la naturaleza mientras reconocemos la importancia de los latinos en la conservación y la recreación.

Programa

9am: encuentro en el South Campground Amphitheater en el Parque Nacional Zion

Traiga su propio café y tome un cafecito con park rangers y interns, prepárese para la caminata y escuche nuestra bienvenida a la Semana de la Conservación Latina de Zion.

9:30 am: comienza la caminata en el sendero Pa'rus, que sale de South Campground Amphitheater

La caminata será de aproximadamente 2 millas de largo y tomará alrededor de 1,5 horas. El sendero Pa'rus es un paseo llano y pavimentado junto al río virgen. The hike will be approximately 2 miles long and will take around 1.5 hrs. The Pa’rus trail is a flat, paved walk next to the virgin river. It is wheelchair accessible, bike and dog friendly, and considered an easy hike. It will be hot, and there will not be much shade cover. Please, plan accordingly and wear comfortable shoes, cool clothes, a hat, and sunscreen.

LUNCH – After the hike, there will be a break for lunch. Participants can bring their own lunch and are welcome to eat on the lawn at the nature center or explore the rest of the park. Food concessions are offered at the Zion Lodge, or in Springdale.

1pm-4pm – Activities at the Nature Center

Activity tables by our Latino Heritage Internship Program and Greening Youth interns. Come enjoy activities for the whole family and learn about the cultural research our interns are doing. Participants can expect loteria, mural, and mapping activities that will be set out on the lawn next to the Nature Center.

Information:

Locations: The South Campground Amphitheater is accessible from the Nature Center Parking Lot, which is the second turn to the right after entering the park from the south entrance, or from walking up the Pa'rus trail from the Visitor Center.

The Nature Center is located in-between the Museum (shuttle stop 2) and the Visitor Center (shuttle stop 1), and is right next to the South Campground. It is accessible from the Nature Center parking lot, which is the second right turn after entering from the South Entrance or walking up the Pa'rus trail from the visitor center about 10 minutes.

Parking: There is usually parking spaces at the Nature Center parking lot before 9am. It is highly recommended to enter the park before 9am to find the best parking and to avoid traffic to enter the park. Other parking options in the park include the Visitor Center parking lot and pull outs along the road (if all four tires are on pavement and the car is not in the street). If parking in the park is full, there is parking in the town of Springdale, visitors can use the Springdale shuttle to get to the park entrance.

What to Bring: Plenty of water, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, cool clothing, food or snacks, and the whole family!

9am: encuentro en el South Campground Amphitheater en el Parque Nacional Zion

Nonnative/Invasive Plant Removal

Join Travis County Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP) in celebrating the 10^th anniversary of Latino Conservation Week (July 15 – 23) on Saturday, July 22nd from 8:30 – 11am to remove invasive plants. Latino Conservation Week: Disfrutando y Conservando Nuestra Tierra is an initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation and is a way to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources.

The Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP) is one of the nation’s largest urban preserves, covering more than 33,000 acres in Central Texas. It protects habitat for endangered and species of concern. This workday will consist of nonnative plant removal, which allows for native trees and other plants that wildlife depends on to thrive. For this activity, we'll be hand-pulling vinca, also known as periwinkle. While this plant is typically used commercially in yards, overgrowth of this species has inhibited other native foliage and trees to grow. This activity will be mostly sitting in the shade, hand or tool pulling at a leisurely pace. Latino Conservation Week | Bilingual Hikes in Lincoln's Footsteps

Join us at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in celebration of Latino Conservation Week! We will have a booth set up in front of the Visitor Center where we will have engaging activities for the kids, as well as Junior Ranger books to become a Junior Ranger and get their Badge! The booth will be available to visitors all day. There will also be a bilingual guided hike from 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM CST. Anyone is welcome. Look for the interns in blue shirts, they will guide you to the Cabin site memorial and the Living Historical Farm where a replica of Lincoln's boyhood home is located. You'll get to learn about the trees and plants that grow in the area and much more!

Latino Conservation Week – Desert Arachnid Nightwalk

Desert Arachnid Nightwalk – Paseo del Alacrán

Did you know that deserts in the American Southwest are relatively young? It could be said that many spiders and scorpions here ultimately have origins in Latin America. Join a local arachnid specialist for an easy nighttime walk along the trails of the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area where we will talk about the nocturnal lifestyles of these diverse and curious creatures. If we are lucky, we just might see some too!

**NOTE – To prevent impact on the desert ecosystem and ensure the safety of participants, this event is LIMITED TO 15 PEOPLE. Once this event fills up, you will be placed on a waiting-list so that you may have priority on our next nightwalk!**

Conserve Southwest Utah and Red Cliffs Desert Reserve naturalists will be there to answer questions about local wildlife and plants. Latino Conservation Week Dark Sky Event / Evento Abajo De Las Estrellas

Come celebrate Latino Conservation Week at this International Dark Sky Park! View galaxies, planets, nebulae, and our Moon through high-powered telescopes provided by park staff and volunteers.

Latino Conservation Week is a national effort created in 2014 to promote conservation and stewardship of our natural resources, and to provide recreational opportunities for the Latino community. There are nearly 200 events occurring nationwide throughout the week!

Limpieza y Caminata en High Falls con Latinos Aventureros

Nos complace anunciar que Latinos Aventureros ha adoptado la hermosa cascada High Falls en Dupont Forest. Esta cascada es frecuentemente visitada y estamos comprometidos a conservar y cuidar del ambiente. Juntos podemos hacer una diferencia. Acompáñanos a nuestra primera limpieza allí.

En esta área no hay señal de celular, por lo que es de suma importancia descargar el mapa antes. Asegúrense de tenerlo guardado en su dispositivo para encontrar el lugar de encuentro sin problemas.

Es importante confirmar tu asistencia ya que tenemos espacios limitados. En la sección de comentarios, por favor confirma si vienes solo o con cuántos acompañantes vienes. Se les proveerá trash pick up grabbers y bolsas de basura. También pueden traer sus propias bolsas grandes fuertes de basura.

Recuerden llevar agua para mantenerse hidratados durante la actividad. Además, consideren llevar una toalla por si se mojan, ya que estaremos cerca de las cascadas y puede haber salpicaduras refrescantes.

Tomaremos un tiempo para almorzar y compartir. Por favor, traigan su propio almuerzo para disfrutarlo juntos en medio de la naturaleza.

Hello everyone!

We are excited to announce that Latinos Aventureros has adopted the beautiful High Falls in Dupont Forest. This waterfall is frequently visited, and we are committed to conserving and caring for the environment. Together, we can make a difference. Join us for our first clean-up there.

Date: July 15
Meeting time: 7:30 am

Please note that there is no cellphone signal in this area, so it is crucial to download the map beforehand. Make sure to have it saved on your device to easily find the meeting location.

It is important to confirm your attendance as we have limited spaces. In the comments section, please confirm if you are coming alone or with how many companions. Trash pick-up grabbers and garbage bags will be provided, but you can also bring your own large and sturdy garbage bags.

Remember to bring water to stay hydrated during the activity. Additionally, consider bringing a towel in case you get wet as we will be near the waterfalls, and there may be refreshing splashes.

We will take a break for lunch and to share. Please bring your own lunch to enjoy together in the midst of nature.

After lunch, we will explore Triple Falls and Hooker Falls, two equally impressive waterfalls nearby.
