What is Latino Conservation Week?

Latino Conservation Week: Disfrutando y Conservando Nuestra Tierra is an initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation (HAF). Latino Conservation Week was created to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources. During this week, community, non-profit, faith-based, and government organizations and agencies hold events throughout the country. From hiking and camping to community roundtables and film screenings, these activities promote conservation efforts in their community, and provide an opportunity for Latinos to show their support for permanently protecting our land, water, and air. Read more about it here.

How can I get involved?

You can support LCW and be involved in a number of ways including hosting an event, participating or attending an event, and/or donating funds to support our mini-grants. If you can’t host, participate, or donate, sharing about LCW on social media and amplifying events is a huge support to us and our partners!

What counts as a LCW event?

LCW events are inclusive of all communities, but in particular are events that break down barriers our community faces when it comes to outdoor recreation and/or conservation efforts. For this reason, we encourage our partners to host events that are free or low-cost to the public, have appropriate transportation considerations, are bilingual, and offer resources for communities to engage in opportunities outside of LCW. As to what the event looks like, LCW events are beautiful in that they don’t fit inside of a box. Events from the past include anything from community roundtable discussions to camping trips to video series to musical performances and anything in between.

What types of events have been planned in the past?

You can browse through all of our past events in the LCW archive found on our website, but some of our favorite ideas have included rafting trips, fishing events, poetry & nature events, activity care packages, roundtable discussions on topics such as Intersectional Environmentalism, and so many others. Please see our Creative Event & Engagement Guide in the resources section of this website for more ideas.

What is Hispanic Access’ role in LCW?

Latino Conservation Week is an initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation, but over the years has become an initiative that is run by our community for our community. Hispanic Access is the platform that allows for our partners to be seen and heard through Latino Conservation Week campaigns and events. We are here to help you organize your event by providing the resources necessary to planning your event, offering help in establishing community partnerships and connections, and more recently, offering funding opportunities to financially support your efforts. We amplify these events and our partners within our networks and to the media. Lastly, we also host a few signature events of our own and in partnership with our peers during the week.

Can I receive funding for my event?

Yes! In the months leading up to LCW, we release a Request for Support in which you can apply for funding to support various aspects of your event. We provide funding for materials and equipment, permits, coordinator stipends, and other logistical components needed to fund your event. We also accept requests for LCW materials, like stickers. Keep an eye out on the website for the announcement of the mini-grant cycle coming soon!

Partnerships

How can I find partners in my area?

We can help! We’re happy to help you connect with organizations we’re connected with in your area, if we can. Other ways to get connected with the LCW network are by attending our community webinars, which we host in the last few months leading up to LCW, and to find the community leaders in your area. We recommend partnering with other organizations, including government agencies, but also look to local parks, churches, youth groups, and even schools to work with.

Can I partner with Hispanic Access?

While we limit the amount of events we directly plan, we love working with other groups and organizations on different aspects of LCW. And for those that we can’t partner with directly, we’re happy to support your event financially, by amplifying it, or in other ways that can be helpful. If you’re interested in partnering with us on an event, please contact us at lcw@hispanicaccess.org.
