Join our Latino Conservation Week celebration. Pack your backpack and join Defiende Nuestra Tierra a Wilderness Workshop program on a family-friendly hike and picnic up the Grizzly Creek Trail, near Glenwood Springs. This gentle hike is appropriate for families and kids ages 7 and up. While the trail continues for several miles, we’ll go for just 3 or 4 total along the mostly flat, first part of the trail. The trail parallels the creek through a beautiful canyon near the Colorado River on the I-70 corridor. This hike will provide ample opportunity for bird watching along the creek, picnicking and learning about the extensive public lands in our area, and how you can enjoy them and care for them. This hike will be led by English and Spanish speaking guides.

In order to celebrate Latino Conservation week this workshop is free and available to the public! We will talk about the history, chemistry, and conservation aspects of soap making! We will be using the melt and pour technique, no lye or chemicals involved. They are fun to make, and they make great gifts! Get your family together for a creative evening, or make new friends (online) while learning a new craft.
Appropriate for ages 7 and up with parental supervision. This technique is often thought of as an introduction to soap making. Many people move on to cold process soap making. But many people also just enjoy the melt and pour technique as well! Register in advance to reserve your materials! A majority of materials, shipping, and virtual instruction are included.
In order to register please contact Sasha Azeez at Sasha_Azeez@Fws.gov!
We will be shipping out supplies so please include your name, phone number, and shipping address. Materials you will need that are not included: rubbing alcohol, a microwave or supplies for a double broiler, A cutting instrument, and bowls. Two kits available per household. Use instruments that you are able to part with. Many people have dedicated soap making supplies, because some fragrances and additives stay with the objects. Especially if they are made with porous material. AKA don’t use your favorite bowl or try to make cupcakes with the silicon molds that are provided.

We plan to reach the Latino community with a multi-faceted, one-hour webinar in English and Spanish with several components that all work together to showcase the value of native plants and pollinators (especially hummingbirds and monarchs) in their local neighborhoods. We’ll show pictures of the existing native plant restoration project that we have been working in OVRP and give an update to the folks that volunteered to plant these natives in early 2020.
We will also translate existing San Diego Audubon Education activities and resources into Spanish, and share those for free with the webinar participants if they are looking for family-friendly activities over the summer. We’ll partner with the California Native Plant Society San Diego Chapter to share tips for growing native milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis and A. speciosa) at home and explain the lifecycle of milkweeds and monarchs. This live portion of the webinar will be in Spanish, as well. We’ll include information and stories about how to take care of Monarch caterpillars if their milkweeds attract them, show a video/photos of raising Monarch butterflies and releasing them, and we’ll include links to community science projects that are collecting information on our rapidly dwindling (December 2020 is when the USFWS decision on listing Monarchs is due) western population of Monarchs (https://www.monarchmilkweedmapper.org/, and/or https://transom.org/2013/google-earth-tour-monarch-butterflies/).
Beforehand, we’ll send webinar participants who have signed up a care package with narrow-leaved and/or showy milkweed seeds, brochures on where to buy more, information on how to plant them, as well as bird guide brochures in Spanish. At the end of the webinar, we will give away 10 Spanish bird guides by doing a free raffle and mailing the guides.

In this webinar, we will discuss the impact of shade grown coffee on bird conservation in Quindío, Colombia from a local perspective. Colombia is home to the largest diversity of birds in the entire world and particularly impacted by the drastic and horrifying downwards trend in bird populations worldwide since 1970. Deforestation in tropical regions due to agriculture contributes to loss of habitat. We will get a chance to speak with Alberto Córdoba from Finca La Palmera about how he has conserved native guadua stands on his third generation family farm in Quindío and taken action to produce only organic, shade grown bird friendly coffee. We will discuss what shade grown coffee is, why it is important and how you as a coffee consumer can help protect wild birds.

As the nation faces the latest in what represents a foundational history of Black death and egregious violence by the police, sanctioned and perpetuated by the state, conversations are being held in our own communities. This work is specifically crucial for the Latinx community, one which, while grappling with its own painful and traumatic relationship with the effects of colonialism, witnessing and experiencing anti-Black racism is all too common. There is always room to grow, to learn, and there’s plenty of impactful work you can do, starting in your everyday life. Let’s dig in.
Speaker Bio: Thalía is an Afro-Indigena healer by lineage, educator, Earth worker, and defender of the People. Born and raised in Coloraztlan (Apache, Ute, Arapaho, Cheyenne territory), identity has been a journey of rediscovery, reclaiming, and decolonizing. As a person of mixed race, Thalía considers herself a bridge between her two communities (Black and Brown) and steps in to address, challenge, and heal lateral violence and conflict between these communities. A teacher and activist, Thalía is honored and humbled to share knowledge and hold space for others who are challenging colonial structures, perspectives, and systems. Thalía strongly believes that healing and education are equal parts to the liberation of our people and to the overall health/harmony of our planet, Pachamama. “It is an honor and privilege to be of service to mi gente and to bare witness to the journey of freeing ourselves of the chains of generational/ancestral oppression.”

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week by participating in our Nature Therapy Event hosted by LHIP intern Cynthia Agustin!
Forest Bathing is a Japanese nature therapy artform that promotes mental health and wellbeing by unplugging from technology and connecting with nature and the outdoors. Forest bathing can be done in any greenspace that you have access to. It can be your backyard, a local park or garden, the beach, or even a grassy area. Once you are in the outdoors let your body do the rest, use all your senses to connect with the space you are in. There are many activities you can do in nature to unwind while forest bathing, some examples are: painting, drawing, reading, yoga, and meditation. Just remember to silence or power off your technology!
This event was created to be all day long for flexibility of participants, feel free to participate for as long (or as little) as you’d like!
Please upload any participation photos online (instagram or twitter) with #LHIPrelaxwithnature.

¡Solo recuerda silenciar o apagar toda tecnología!

Join us for a conversation to explore the several facets that pull us, as Latinos, toward nature.
From the faith perspective, we will hear about the call from Pope Francis for the faithful to Care for our Common Home. From the science perspective, we will hear about the interconnectedness of ecosystem and the balance that keeps everything in check.
Lastly, from the health & wellness point of view, how the simple act of being in nature has a positive physical and mental effect on us.

Lotería is a traditional game enjoyed by many in the Latino community. To add some fun tor Latino Conservation week, we will use a special themed deck. The theme being the Census making this a “Censoteria” game!(Census + Loteria= Censoteria)
Participants can expect not only to have fun but to learn a little more about the power of Latino civic engagement. By celebrating Latino Conservation week, participants will connect virtually with outdoor enthusiasts, learn about the importance of the Census and civic participation.

With an optional Q&A after the game to get to know the hosts a little more. You are invited to celebrate Latinidad en Conservación to clean up a shooting area. Public lands an hour from Salt Lake City (and closer to folks living around the southern point of the Oquirrh Mountains) are littered with trash: shotgun shells, target shrapnel, and left-behind cans and bottles densely scatter a landscape with much target shooting and nearby raptor habitat.
Please meet us for a spatially-distanced clean-up, great music, and the great feeling of leaving a place better than you found it!
RSVP at https://secure2.convio.net/suwa/site/SSurvey?ACTION_REQUIRED=URI_ACTION_USER_REQUESTS&SURVEY_ID=7005
This cleanup is co-hosted by Latino Outdoors of Salt Lake City and HEAL Utah. Follow the entire Cleanup Competition on HEALUtah.org.
How to get there:
From Salt Lake or Utah County, head to Fivemile Pass Recreation Area. Make a pit stop at the Recreation Area if needed, as toilets are not available at the clean-up site. Drive past the Recreation Area, and turn left onto the Pony Express Road. The Road is a well graded dirt road suitable for any vehicle. Drive down the road about 5 miles until you see a sign that says “Leaving Shooting Restriction Area,” then turn left onto the dirt parking lot at that sign.
From Tooele County, drive past Stockton and take a left at the Pony Express Trail historic marker onto highway 73. When the highway bends at the point of the Oquirrhs, turn right onto the Pony Express Rd. Drive down the road about 5 miles until you see a sign that says “Leaving Shooting Restriction Area,” and turn left into the dirt parking lot at that sign.
What To Wear & Bring:
Close-toed shoes are required. Weather will be sunny with no shade. Bring a large water bottle, a wide brimmed hat, and a long sleeve shirt to protect you from the sun and dust.
SUWA will provide: gloves, disposal masks, a hand washing station, hand sanitizer, and water.

In celebration of Latino Conservation Week, the Friends of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge invites Latino families (and all other individuals and families) on a self-guided tour of the first site in our new Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge, the Turner Tract in Genoa City Wisconsin, just 3.25 miles north of Richmond, Illinois.
Take this self-guided tour from Sunday, July 19- Sunday, July 26.
The Turner Tract is a beautiful parcel which features mature oak woodland, restored prairies and wetlands. The self-guided tour will take you on a 0.6 mile looped trail through a very pretty woodland and along a restored tallgrass prairie. It will take around 30 minutes to complete. On your walk enjoy the sights and sounds that both habitats have to offer. Look closely for any blooming wildflowers tucked within the tall prairie grasses and stand beneath the mature red oak trees in the woodlands. There are many interesting bird species to be seen and heard. If you hear a loud drilling sound, that is the pileated woodpecker that resides in these woods, a large bird that resembles WoodyWoodpecker!
Feel free to explore and discover new and interesting things - just remember to leave what you find for the next person to enjoy. To get to the site from Illinois, travel north on Route 12 and continue through Richmond into Wisconsin. Just after you enter Wisconsin, turn left onto County Road H and stay on H through Genoa City. As you are heading out of town, keep an eye out for a large brown Hackmatack Refuge sign on your left just past a row of houses. This sign identifies the location of a small parking lot to park in and an informational kiosk. Follow the narrow lane past a residence to the hiking trail. From Lake Geneva, take County Road H south and look for the brown Hackmatack Refuge sign on your right as you come into Genoa City for the parking lot.Additional signs will be available on the site to guide you along the trail, which begins just past the gate.
This is a self-guided tour and no registration is necessary. If you do go on the tour we would appreciate a quick note on what you thought of the tour. Drop Pete Jackson a line at beepjackson@comcast.net.
If you visit, it is critically important to follow guidance from the CDC and state and local public health authorities on social distancing, avoiding overcrowding, and exercising good hygiene. If a parking lot is full when you visit, please do not stop. We understand that the outdoors can help relieve stress, but these guidelines must be followed for our public health and safety

The Next 100 Colorado Mentorship Program is a six-month program for a cohort of 10 mentors and 10 mentees designed to help connect Colorado's emerging and seasoned leaders of color through a series of partnerships, network formation, and leadership building. The program will consist of three full cohort gatherings (including an orientation), three one-on-one meetings, and a closing celebration, in addition to an online environment through which the group will be able to connect and share resources. With uncertainty about restrictions on travel and in-person gatherings likely to persist throughout the year, the program will be designed to accommodate virtual gatherings in the short-term with the potential to shift to in-person gatherings as state and national circumstances change.
Participants will:
Tailor their experience to their individual goals and needs
Establish mentor/mentee relationships, along with relationships with a larger cohort, that ideally last long beyond the structured program
Access people, organizations, events, or other opportunities that they may not otherwise have had access to
Build leadership capacity Learn from experts in DEI, conservation, outdoor recreation, and public lands management

HAF and the IERCD are partnering with the SB County MGs to host a native seed planting kit pick up event and car parade. The event will be held at the beautiful MVNC. The hope is that participants will plant and care for their native species including a CA Poppy, Arroyo Lupine, or Narrow Leaf Milkweed to create a sense of stewardship for plants and other natural resources. The plant can then be implmented into a garden our outdoor space in Fall to offer the beginnings of a habitat for California native pollinators and other beneficial insects.

In partnership with the US Forest Service NatureWatch Program, we would like to invite all members of the community to a total-immersion day on the river. Bilingual (Spanish/English) guides will help us ‘dive’ into the beauty of the river in two languages.Snorkeling and kayaking/equipment will be provided for your $40/person contribution. There are also a limited number of canoes that can be rented out for $50 for two people (or two plus a small child).
These days, it can be a challenge to come together and feel safe. This is a great opportunity for you and your organization’s members to have a fun day outdoors, relax, celebrate diversity of all kinds, and learn about what is on -- and in -- the river. The river is safe, and social distancing/Covid-19 prevention protocols will be practiced diligently.
We will meet at Front Royal Outdoors at 10 a.m.( 8567 Stonewall Jackson Hwy, Front Royal, VA 22630), and be shuttled up to the Karo Boat Landing, where we will float (paddling/snorkeling) our way down a gentle three-mile stretch of water, taking out at the Front Royal Outdoors landing. The water is clear and there are lots of places to stop and view fish and other underwater features. The Shenandoah Riverkeeper and USFS certified freshwater snorkelers will guide the trip.
Please bring closed-toe water shoes (no flip-flops), sunscreen, and any food/drink you may need. All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver before the trip, and should have at least basic swimming/paddling skills.Additionally, the health and safety of our guests and staff are of the utmost importance to us. The outfitter sanitizes every vehicle every time that vehicle is used to transport guests. They also sanitize all equipment before it is issued to guests. Also, please be advised that all guests will be required to wear a face-covering while on Front Royal Outdoors property and in the shuttle vehicles. Paddlers will not be required to wear face-covering while on the river. Please keep your face covering dry while on the river as you will be required to wear it on once you return to the grounds of Front Royal Outdoors.

During this week, Latino community, nonprofits, faith-based organizations and government agencies across the United States will go on hiking, fishing, rafting, hunting or camping outings in national conservation lands, national monuments, national forest, state and local parks and other public lands, to learn about conservation efforts in their community, and show their support for permanently protecting our land, water and air.
We invite you to follow us this week and enjoy videos, storytelling and "Go West, Young Podcast" to learn more about how latinos conserving our land. Also take this time to go outdoors and share your love for our land through pictures and stories on social media using these hashtags so we can all join the celebration virtually. #LCW2020 #latinoconservationweek #colorado
Y'all remember last year when a group of us went out with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and got on the Appalachian Trail to rerouted a small section of it? Well, this year due to COVID-19 we're switching things up a little.⠀⠀
Wherever you are, let's kickstart Latino Conservation Week #LCW2020 by tuning into our stories on Sunday. ⠀⠀
I will be live-streaming this July 19th at 4 PM EST. Following this live-stream, the goal is to get people outside and use social media to bring awareness to the conservancies that maintain and take care of the trails we enjoy. There will be awesome giveaways for people who choose to participate! (participation guidelines below) We invite you to join us by getting outside, hiking a trail near you, and bringing awareness to your local conservancies!⠀⠀
When? ⠀
Virtual Hike: July 19th @ 4 EST⠀

Contact-less Community Distribution of Navigation, Nutrition, and Grow Kits Latino Outdoors is collaborating with ViVe Wellness, Denver Urban Gardens, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to keep Latino Conservation Week going with a Contactless Community Distribution of Navigation, Nutrition, and Grow Kits and Education! The kits and education will be provided to community members in ViVe Wellness programs. ViVe primarily serves families that are from Latin American immigrant backgrounds and primarily Spanish-speaking, with younger community members being bilingual in English and Spanish. ViVe Wellness directly works with families in Denver neighborhoods to provide health, fitness, swimming, and most recently, outdoors education in fun, interactive, bilingual, community settings. There will be 3 Pick-Up Stations at Russell Square Park:Navigation Kit: Map and Compass. Map and compass are part of the 10 Essentials in the Outdoors and increasing navigation skills within our community is an integral part of being prepared and comfortable recreating and enjoying the outdoors.Colorado Parks and Wildlife, who also provided the maps, was able to provide the ViVe Wellness Youth Pathways program participants with a navigation lesson. Two Youth Pathways participants will be teaching the community how to use these materials in a virtual class later in the day.Nutrition Kit: Healthy Snacks and EducationViVe Wellness is passionate about providing the community with healthy alternatives to processed food that families that they work with usually have the most easy-access to. They will be providing healthy snacks and information to combat unhealthy food, because conservation also means conservation of our health, body, and spirit to be able to thrive. Conservation starts from within, and that starts with what you put in your body.Grow Kit: Starter Plants and Fall Crop SeedsGrowing a garden is an activity that can be done at home that connects people with nature. This collaboration with Denver Urban Gardens strives to bring more growing of gardens into the homes of the Latinx community and to give practical advice on the Colorado growing season. Creating a sustainable food system by making growing food accessible is one big way we wanted to contribute to Latino Conservation Week. The kit will also have two recipe cards and a small recipe book that was donated from the American Cancer SocietyWe will be following COVID-19 guidelines and all participating community members will have a scheduled pick-up time and will rotate between Stations, maintain social distancing, and wear masks at all times during the event.
