The All Girls Trail Crew is open to Latina youth ages 14-18 who live in Washington state. The crew will be spending a week engaging in stewardship and care of Mt. Rainier National Park, while also hiking and camping in this iconic park. Youth participants will be paid a $150 stipend for their work, and are receiving gear donations for future adventures courtesy of MSR and REI.

In 2017 and 2018, the crew built trails, explored rivers and had important and meaningful conversations about diversity in the outdoors. The girls left the program feeling inspired and having contributed over 30 hours of volunteer trail work each. We're looking forward to another great trip in 2019!

In celebration of Latino Conservation Week, we will be offering a bilingual interpretative hike on the cultural history of Mission Creek Preserve. The preserve sits on ancestral lands of the Serrano & Cahuilla tribes and showcases an incredible diversity of flora and fauna through the meeting of our Sonoran and Mojave deserts.

Interactive hike and picnic in the beautiful Puente Hills and Chino Hills in the lovely Chino Hills State Park and also tour the park’s Discovery Center to learn about the region’s wild life and habitat. The State Park Interpreter will share will take some time to speak with the group about the importance of taking care of our public lands and his experience with careers in California State Parks. Lastly, we will participate in a “Litter Getter” walk to educate participantes about how we can keep our parks clean.

Stop by the Kell Visitor Center between 9AM and 12PM to sample some bird friendly coffee. Start off Latino Conservation Week by learning how farming this delicious coffee in South America contributes to conservation efforts that affect our own backyard birds.

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week by learning all about the unique insect that we share with our South American neighbors.

Monarch butterflies are a source of fascination for many, partly due to their brilliant color and large size, but also because of their ability to migrate between Mexico and N. America.

Join the park naturalist at the Kell Visitor Center to learn all about this unique insect. We'll talk about their characteristics and adaptations, why and when they migrate, their life cycle, and more. Visitors will get an opportunity to learn how they can be involved in citizen science and conservation efforts for monarch butterflies. We'll end our session with a walk outside to identify monarch eggs and larvae.

Join the park naturalist at the Kell Visitor Center to learn the ins and outs of pollination, why we rely on it, and the role that pollinator organisms play. Learn about the unique relationship between pollinators and native wildflowers and how you can contribute to their conservation. We'll end our session with a walk in the wildflower fields to identify flowers and pollinators.

In an era where we're bombarded by information that details how our way of life is impacting the world around us, it can sometimes be overwhelming trying to figure out what steps to take to lower our ecological footprint. Join the park naturalist at the Kell Visitor Center to learn simple tips, tricks, techniques, and even some recipes to lessen our impact on the world around us. Whether you own your home, renting, rooming, or otherwise, these are simple strategies that can be followed by anyone.

Join ATC and Latinx Hikers July 11th through July 13th for a session building new Trail! This may include using hand tools to carve out and dig a flat surface for hikers to walk on. Volunteers will move lots of soil, dirt, and rocks.
Trail Crew projects are planned and completed in cooperation with A.T. maintaining clubs and agency partners such as the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service.
You must apply to get on a Trail Crew. It begins by expressing interest through the form below linked below, and completing an application you receive by email, along with additional material to prepare you for crew life.
Crew Life - All crew members must be able to live and work cooperatively and in close proximity with fellow volunteers of all genders, ages, and nationalities. All crew members are expected to participate in routine tasks, including cooking, cleaning, and tool care, both at base camp and the project site.
Crews are led by experienced, professional crew leaders eager to pass along Trail work and backcountry skills.
What We Provide - Appalachian Trail Conservancy provides training, equipment, and food, transportation to and from the project sites, and group camping gear.
After two days of working as a team, learning new skills, and living in the backcountry both the crew and the trail is transformed.
No experience is necessary, but you must be at least 18 years old to join this crew.

Latino Conservation Week: Disfrutando y Conservando Nuestra Tierra is an initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation (HAF). Latino Conservation Week (LCW) was created to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources. For 2019, the Arizona Trail Association would like to provide an opportunity to screen three short films about conservation in the desert southwest:

• Land, Water y Comunidad – a short film from the HAF exploring the relationship Latinos across the nation have with Land and Water Conservation Fun sites.
• Soy Rojo – this Spanish-language film explores the importance of the Colorado River and its tributaries, the impact human developments on the river and measures that can be taken to protect this important ecosystem.

Tour of the Rio Bosque Wetlands park by John Sproul and Maryflor Garcia. We will be talking about the history, plants, and animals of the Rio Bosque. This will be a 2 hour hike, make sure to bring plenty of water, sun protection, long sleeve shirt, long pants, and lots of bug spray. Meeting place for all activities is a bridge crossing the Riverside Canal. From I-10, take Americas Ave. (Loop 375) to Pan American Dr., turn left onto Pan American and travel 1.5 miles to the bridge.

Get ready to raft (or float, sometimes walk) the Rio Bravo for Latino Conservation Week!
Friends of Organ Mountains, the Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project, Latino Outdoors and Hispanic Access Foundation have teamed up to sponsor another awesome trip down the Rio Bravo to honor the contributions of the Hispanic/Latinx community to conservation efforts across the country, and to get out and enjoy nature.

Before we launch, we will be learning about the history of the Robledo Mountains, the human habitation of the Rio Bravo in southern New Mexico, and some recent wins for creating equity in outdoor recreation.

This nature walk is open to the public and community members in the Greater Los Angeles Area. It is an opportunity for people to familiarize themselves with their local park and community. Los Angeles Audubon guides will take you on a walk to learn about the local birds and native plants using Kenneth Hahn as habitat. The guides will go over the history of the park, how our wildlife uses is, and the importance of conserving it.

The event will take place July 19th, 9am-4pm, at the King County Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is a partnership with the King County wastewater treatment plant, who strive to be an inclusive facility. The event will include activities outdoors at their CitySoil farm which would include getting hands on in the garden, lunch, and then a wastewater treatment plant tour. The CitySoil Farm is an urban space used for environmental education to promote community food systems. The Farm’s mission/vision is to educate the public about community participation and innovation, and ecologically and socially sustainable food systems, to help people make informed decisions and develop innovative solutions for food challenges.

Water Systems and Food Systems Education Field Trips South Wastewater Treatment Plant and CitySoil Farm
What happens when we “borrow” water from the water cycle in our homes, schools and businesses? In this field trip, participants will learn how they participate in the water cycle every time they turn on their tap, run the dishwasher or even go to the bathroom. We also cover how both water and nutrients are recycled as a reusable resource and how choices we all have on a daily basis impact the water cycle.
Then participants will spend the afternoon at CitySoil Farm on South Treatment Plant property learning about how this community farm uses the recycled resources from the treatment plant (i.e. biosoilds and recycled water) to grow food. Participants would also be participating in an on-going and seasonal project to help maintain this community farm and continue to help us donate all the food to the White Center Food Bank.

Interactive and Educational walk through Prado Regional Park followed by a picnic and special presentation by the office of San Bernardino County Supervisor Hagman.

Where You'll Be:
In Southern Colorado, the small town of San Luis was originally established in 1851 and is the oldest continuously occupied town in the state. Nearby, on the western edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the recently established Rito Seco Park has great potential to serve the local communities and is part of Costilla County's master plan to develop a system of trails, recreation resources, and protected lands meant to represent the unique natural and cultural heritage of the area.

What You'll Do:
Build a brand new trail with VOC during Latino Conservation Week! On this moderately sized project of 60-75 people, volunteers ages 14+ will spend the weekend creating a new section of trail in Rito Seco Park that will provide a short, easy loop out of a picnic area to beaver ponds and the ruins of three historic cabins. You'll get to select from a variety of work, including more technical tasks for those who enjoy a challenge. Campsites are provided nearby and meals will be provided by our volunteer Crew Chefs on Saturday and Sunday.

Why It Matters:
While surrounded by stunning vistas, communities in Costilla County have a long history of public access issues as the vast majority of land is privately owned. This project is part of a much larger initiative to expand recreational access and encourage stewardship within the local community and your efforts will be a tremendous help in turning the County's plan into a reality.

Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on overnight projects. Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on single-day projects.
Volunteers are responsible for providing their own camping equipment. VOC will provide meals, tools, and work gloves.

July 18 is the East Coast premiere of Ay Mariposa, a new documentary about three characters living on the US-Mexico border, directly in the path of the border wall. The documentary explores the close ties between human communities and the natural world, and the threat of divisions upon the borderlands landscape. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the film's director and two main characters: Zulema Hernandez, a lifelong migrant worker and advocate for human rights and wildlife; and Marianna Trevino Wright, director of the National Butterfly Center. Centro de Adoracion Familar church will take their annual trip down to Davis Camp in AZ for their baptismal event. The purpose of the event is mulitfold; parishioners and guests will practice their faith, connect with nature, and enjoy their time together as a family. 

In partnership with Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, Hispanic Access and Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal is organizing a whale watch for 75 congregants and students from Lawrence public schools. Participants will learn about humpback whales and marine life, environmental career opportunities, and the protection of marine resources. As students learn about whale migration and marine sanctuaries, they will discuss the environmental, cultural and social connections between the Eastern US and the Caribbean.

Nevada Department of Wildlife is providing fishing instruction and equipment for Centro de Adoracion Familiar church members, many of whom are fishing for the first time! Vamos a pescar!

Help us celebrate Latinx Living History and Conservation at Fort Larned! Hispanic Traders were a powerful presence along the Santa Fe Trail from 1821-1878. Come learn about our history while feasting on traditional Mexican food and watching ballet folklorico dance performances at a real 19th century fort. Kids can help create Monarch Butterfly habitat with our giant Milkweed seed ball launcher. Family friendly crafts, live blacksmith demonstrations, film screenings and so much more!

Join us at the Bluff Lake Nature Center for an evening of food, poetry, kid's activities, and walks around the park! We'll eat, mingle, and learn about different outdoor resources in the metro Denver area. Then, while the kids partake in different nature-themed arts & crafts activities, we'll partake in a poetry & nature workshop with local poet, Franklin Cruz. After the workshop, we'll offer the opportunity to walk around the Nature Center as the sun starts to set.

experience one of the properties of the amazing Prairie Corridor on Haines Branch.
A Bioblitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living
species within a designated area, so we’ll be counting as many living things in 3 hours as we
can! We’ll have four teams counting: a bird team, insect team, plants team, and stream &
everything else team. A special bird banding demonstration will start off the day! See the
schedule below, water and snacks will be available. Bring your own water bottle to refill.

Travel back in time with us for Latino Conservation Week! On Saturday, July 20th from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, explore Mission San Jose and experience the sights, skills, and smells of the missions in the 1700s. Pick up your Passport to the Past in the Visitor Center. Step back in time with us! Make clay pots, seedballs, and scented sachets at booths inside the mission. Learn about historical and modern uses of natural resources at this free, family friendly event.

Birding Focus: We will look for seasonal migrants and resident species. Morningside Nature Preserve is a 33-acre preserve easily accessible from I-85 near Cheshire Bridge Road. The preserve straddles South Fork Peachtree Creek and provides good habitat for both shrubland birds in its power corridor as well as woodland species along the trails.

The duration of the walk will be three hours with about two to three miles of walking, including a steep hill and a few flights of stairs. Note: There are no bathrooms on our route so go easy on the coffee.

Birding Focus: Discover the urban bird habitat at Blue Heron Nature Preserve, the home base for Atlanta Audubon Society. The focus will be migratory species and year-round residents including songbirds, woodpeckers, and waterfowl.

This is an excellent field trip for beginning birders. Families are welcomed. Binoculars will be available on site to borrow.

The program consists of a birding activity in the prairie, a short talk about the importance of the conservation of natural resources and the protection of our birds, and a bilingual tour through our site.

In the morning, we will drive up via carpool from the Sierra Club office at 3828 Meadows Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89107. We will depart the office at 9:00 am and meet at the Pinyon Picnic Site at approximately 10:00 am. Participants will have an opportunity to take an easy family friendly hike and explore the Spring Mountains, one or two miles along the Acastus Trail. Then around noon, we will provide a free picnic lunch and information about the Sierra Club's current activities and committees. Bring the whole family. Children and pets welcome. Bring snacks, good walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen.

Train to become a Master Rain Gardener! Take the class from your own computer or phone. A link to join the online class will be sent via e-mail before class starts. Learn to design your own rain garden step-by-step and get expert feedback on designing, digging and planting. Then, share your knowledge and become your neighborhood's expert on rain gardens.

Rain Gardens capture and soak in the rainwater that runs off hard surfaces like roofs and driveways. This rainwater runoff picks up dirt and is the #1 source of pollution in rivers. Anyone can plant a rain garden in their own yard. You must attend all 5 online classes, and build a rain garden to earn the Master Rain Gardener certification. Field trip TBD. Meet the Student Conservation Association Water Safety Interns and the park rangers at Sandy Hook for an event promoting conservation. The interns will share water safety strategies and tips when swimming in the ocean and bay waters & the park rangers will lead activities about marine pollution prevention. We hope to see you there!

Beach safety tips to make sure you and your family are safe in the water. Activities are available for children to participate and win a give-away.

Come and enjoy the night sounds of summer. These evenings will go on a late-night nature walk to count and observe bats in the area. This is a part of an important community science initiative in your neighborhood to document the species of bats and to learn more about the nature in your neighborhood. We will need your help!

Join the National Park Service, Community Nature Connection, and Latinooutdoors to restore habitat by watering, removing weeds, and mulching around native plantings recently installed as part of post-fire recovery in the area after the devastating effects of the Woolsey fire. This restoration will enhance the natural post-fire recovery in the area of native species which have been diminished through the years from urban development and human-related disturbances. Please come prepared with sturdy shoes or boots, pants and long-sleeves, a reusable water bottle, and sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses). Gloves, tools, and water refills will be provided. *Participants are invited to meet at Vista Hermosa Natural Park (100 N Toluca St, Los Angeles, CA 90026) at 8:00am to be provided with free transportation to our restoration site at Peter Strauss Ranch.

Join us in celebrating Latino Conservation Week as we hike the trails of Point Reyes National Seashore with Latino Heritage Internship Program Intern and learn about its animals, vegetation, ecology and culture. The interpretative hike will be led by a Spanish-English bilingual guide.

Estan invitados a una caminata interpretativa para celebrar La Semana de Conservación Latina donde aprenderemos sobre los animales, las plantas, la ecología y la cultura de Point Reyes National Seashore. La caminata será presentada en inglés/o en español por un guía bilingüe.

It’s almost impossible to go one day without using a single-use plastic before discarding it into the trashcan. The problem with most plastics is that they never really decompose, but instead break down into smaller and smaller pieces, even to microscopic levels when exposed to the elements. Unfortunately, the immense amount of plastic pollution produced in the last few decades is having a health and safety impact on seabirds, marine mammals, wildlife, and people. However, communities everywhere can be the solution to plastic pollution. For this Latino Conservation Week program, we will focus on building awareness on plastic pollution and ways we can reduce our plastic use to help the environment we all depend on.

Here the three ways we are celebrating it: Camping, enjoying the sunset, birdwatching, kayaking, and salsa dancing!
Do not miss enjoying our Sanctuary as very few people have done so before.
- On Friday night, we will do a sunset/night bird walk, icebreaker games, leave no trace talk, Point Reyes National Seashore talk (by a Hispanic Access Foundation Intern), campfire, giveaways, and will have a great time together salsa dancing while dinner is being served.
- On Saturday, we will divide the groups in two, one will stay and do restoration work on site and the other will go on a interpretative kayak trip in the bay. We will kayak along Sausalito’s waterfront viewing the local wildlife, including seals, and sea lions.

Optional: Visit the Bay Model Visitors Center, it’s free. The Bay Model is a three-dimensional hydraulic model of San Francisco Bay and Delta areas capable of simulating tides and currents. It is over 1.5 acres in size and represents an area from the Pacific Ocean to Sacramento and Stockton, including: the San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun Bays and a portion of the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta. This free canoe paddle along the San Joaquin River is an easy, family friendly activity filled to the brim with cultural and natural information about our watersheds.

Meet at Scout Island at 9:45 AM. We'll paddle and play, then enjoy a light lunch provided by Latino Outdoors volunteers before heading out at 2PM. Be sure to bring sunglasses, water, closed-toed shoes, and sunscreen.

In honor of Latino Conservation Week, we will be hosting a sunset hike at Dripping Springs Natural Area. We will learn about the history and the natural environment of this beautiful place as the full moon of the month rises behind the Organ Mountains. “La Luna Desvela: The Moon Reveals.”​

At 8:30 pm on the Observatory stage at 9697 Utah Trail, we honor Latino Conservation Week with a program in Spanish, English, and American Sign Language. Co-sponsored by the Wildlands Conservancy, Mojave Desert Land Trust, and Sky’s The Limit, the evening features Native American stories told by Blanca Villalobos, Whitewater Preserve’s Education Coordinator.

Art Basulto and Cindy Holland of MDLT will introduce live desert creatures and talk about conserving the land and wildlife. The program will close with music in Spanish, English, and Latin American indigenous languages as the moon rises. Guests are encouraged to linger under the desert night sky. Please bring your own chairs and/or blankets and dress accordingly for summer desert evenings. The observatory will have bales of hay for guests to sit on as well.

This event is free and all ages. Donations of $10 per vehicle are welcome to support continuation of programs such as these. 

Yuma East Wetlands Manager, Vianey Avila will be presenting on how conservation is happening here in Yuma and how our local community can help contribute. This presentation will be given in Spanish.

A guided Spanish tour will be available to the public. Take a walk back in time and tour one of the most infamous Prisons in the Country.

To celebrate Latino Conservation Week 2019, NATURE FOR ALL will hold a second annual community clean-up of the Wildwood Picnic Area and Big Tujunga Creek with a Native Plant Tour with Jr. Field Rangers/ Naturalists! Come join us for food, a float, and a hike! The Grapevine is adjacent to the first designated Wilderness area in the country. Participants can enjoy exploring the Grapevine and the Gila River, or can go on a hike. The hike will follow the main stem of the Gila River. There are multiple river crossings and plenty to see. The trail is also one of the most used alternate routes for the Continental Divide Trail. We will be providing activities for adults and children: e.i. Water Monitoring and Duck making. All of these activities and a float down the river. Participants are asked to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and shoes you don't mind getting wet. Mile Dwelling is a hike up the West Fork of the Gila River. One of the segments being proposed for Wild & Scenic Designation. This hike is intermediate with numerous river crossings and beautiful scenery. Snacks and drinks for the hike will be provided. Participants are asked to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and shoes you don't mind getting wet. We ask that all participants meet at The Silver City Visitors Center at 8 am. The drive is approx. 1.5 hours to the trailhead.

Mogollon Box also know has Box Canyon is a segment being proposed for Wild & Scenic designation. This hike with the help of Audubon, will focus on the birds that occupy Mogollon Box year round and on migratory bird species. We will also be talking about vegatation and habitat for birds that we encounter on this hike. Participants are asked to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and shoes you don't mind getting wet. Silver City is known has The Gateway to the Continental Divide. This hike will begin at the Upper Little Walnut Parking Lot and will be approx. 4 miles round trip. We will do a moderate 3.5-mile hike up Rattlesnake Canyon to the saddle, and return down the same path for tacos at Skofield Park. The trail is shaded through a few sections of the hike, and there is usually water flowing year-round.

WHAT TO BRING:

-Hat

-Sunblock

-At least 2 liters of water (that’s 8 cups).PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP WITH LESS THAN 2 LITRES OF WATER. It's always best to have more than you will drink, then to have to turn around due to heat and lack of sufficient water.

-Comfortable shoes (tennis shoes or hiking shoes). No sandals or open-toed shoes

-If you have a first aid kit, it’s always a good idea to bring one. Or at least band-aids in case for blisters.

-If you have a backpack, bring it to carry your water. If you don’t you can always hand carry your water.

-Snacks! And Don't forget to eat breakfast!

-Tissue in case you need to go to the restroom during the hike, and a bag to carry the used toilet paper. Please note if you do go on the trail, you need to go at least 100 ft away from water. Please do not leave any trash on the trail.

-Zapatos cómodos (tenis o zapatos para caminar). Sin sandalias o zapatos abiertos-Si tiene un botiquín de primeros auxilios, siempre es una buena idea traer uno. O al menos tiritas en caso de que te salga una ampolla.

-Si tienes una mochila, tráela para llevar tu agua. Si no, siempre puedes llevar tu agua a mano.-Apertivos. Por favor tambien come un desayuno para energia.

-Tejido en caso de que necesites ir al baño en la caminata o sonarse la nariz. Tenga en cuenta que si va por el camino, debe alejarse al menos 100 pies del agua. También puede traer un ziplock para llevar su papel higiénico usado. Por favor, no deje basura en el camino.

Noah's Ark Whitewater Rafting and Adventure Co. has invited students with high academic standings from low-income communities for a day of fun activities just outside of Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado. At this event, I will discuss with the students the mission of Latino Conservation Week, the importance of federal land management agencies. Additionally, a Colorado state senator will be present and engaging with students at the event dinner. The purpose of this event is to get young students from low-income communities engaged and excited about participating in the protection and recreation on our nation's public lands.
