Pine Rocklands Naturewalk through Rockdale Pineland Preserve
Pine Rocklands occur only in South Florida, the Florida Keys, and some islands of the Bahamas. These pinelands, interspersed with hardwood hammocks, once covered 185,000 acres of Miami-Dade County. By the time the city of Miami celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1996, only 2% of the pine forest remained within the urbanized areas of the County and outside of the protective border of Everglades National Park. Take a journey though one of the remaining urban pine rocklands oasis with a walk through Rockdale Pineland Preserve!

For thousands of years, sea turtles have been using the Atlantic Coastline of Central Florida each and every summer. Join Refuge Rangers and volunteers to learn about some of the oldest living species on this planet and their story for survival for a free sea turtle talk and walk to find a nesting loggerhead sea turtle on Canaveral National Seashore on Tuesday, July 17 beginning at 8:00 p.m. Families are encouraged and welcome to attend but should wear long pants and long sleeves for mosquitoes. Archaeology Field Day
The San Luis Valley in southern Colorado has a fascinating archaeological record dating back 12,000 years. The Rio Grande National Forest Heritage Program works to help inform people of this rich history through the archaeological record. For Latino Conservation Week the Rio Grande National Forest Heritage Program has been working with the Move Mountains non-profit youth group to provide the members of Move Mountains with an interactive archaeological experience on public lands. Move Mountains Youth Group is a non-profit organization that employs young community members from San Luis over the summer. The program educates the members on conservation, community organizing, environmental activism, entrepreneurism, etc, and helps connect them to the land and their history. San Luis has little access to public land, however is one of the oldest settlements in Colorado.
On Friday, July 20th, 20 children and 4 adult chaperones will be shown multiple historical and prehistoric archaeological sites on BLM land, they will also participate in interactive activities and a mild hike. During these activities the Rio Grande National Forest Heritage Program will inform the participants on opportunities and jobs associated with conservation. There is an abundance of public lands in the San Luis Valley and we hope to help connect these children to these areas, their heritage and opportunities in conservation.

Latino Conservation Celebration Day at Fire Island
Join the Friends of Fire Island National Seashore for a day of family fun as we celebrate Latino Conservation Week at Watch Hill!
Meet at Patchogue Watch Hill Ferry Terminal (150 West Ave) to embark on the ferry to Watch Hill. There will be a lifeguarded beach & Sandy Salty Soccer throughout the day. A Lifeguard Surf Rescue Demonstration will be held on the beach at 11 AM. A ranger led Canoe Tour will take place at 11 AM. **Space is limited and reservations are taken on a first come first serve basis starting at 10 AM** From 10:30 AM – 1 PM Seaside Story Time & Crafts will be taking place at the Dune Station – we will have a bilingual reading of Joel Harper’s “All the Way to the Ocean”. Un gira de interpretación, en Español, de las estructuras ancestrales de los Pueblos. El primer sitio esta ubicado en una cuesta, 7,400 pies en elevación y otro sitio en 7,600 pies. Se necesita escalar/caminar para el segundo sitio, aproximadamente 1/3 de una milla para ver las estructuras y las Piedras Paradas ( Chimney Rock y Companion Rock). Por favor, traiga buenos zapatos de caminata, protector solar y un sombrero, no hay ningún tipo de sombra arriba de la cuesta. Agua y bocadillos será proporcionado.

Latina Trail Crew at Mt. Rainier
The Latina Trail Crew is comprised of 6 youth and 2 leaders who will be spending a week engaging in stewardship and care of Mt. Rainier National Park. Youth participants will be paid a $150 stipend for their work, and are receiving stoves and mess kits for future adventures courtesy of MSR.
In 2017, the crew built trails, explored rivers and had difficult conversations about diversity in the outdoors. All nine girls left the program feeling inspired and having contributed over 30 hours of volunteer trail work each. We're looking forward to another great trip this year.

Family Friendly Native Plant Seed Collection for Ecological Restoration Efforts
Boulder County Seed Collection I - Family Friendly - Minimum Age: 8 with Adult. Volunteers will help ensure the success of future public land restoration projects by hand-collecting seeds from a variety of native species, including grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs in the foothills of Boulder,CO. Local botanists will be working on site and will provide identification of wildflowers and other native plants during the project.
Why collect native seeds? Using native seeds in re-vegetation efforts is essential to restoring native plant diversity. Some native species are not available commercially, are too expensive, or the available seeds are not ecologically appropriate. Our collected seeds will be used in local habitat restoration projects, or may be grown out in an agricultural setting to increase them 100 or 1000 fold, vastly increasing the amount of locally-adapted seed that is available for local restoration projects.
LOCATION TO BE DETERMINED!
The location of seed collections can only be determined 2-3 days prior to each event, given the varying growth rates of the many species we collect. This project is in Boulder County. Every Saturday in July and August the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park will be conducting outdoor recreation and science exploration activities at the Captain Wilbur Kelly House Museum in Lincoln RI. There is no cost and families are encouraged to stay after Science Saturday to explore the Kelly House Museum, the Blackstone River and Canal, as well as the Blackstone Bikeway. Programming is 60-90 minutes long and starts at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
In case of inclement weather, we will have alternate activities in the barn at Kelly House.
On July 14 we will be testing the water of both the Blackstone River and the Blackstone Canal. There will be a simplified water testing kit for younger children as well as a more comprehensive water testing kit for teenagers.

Pollinator Garden Installation at El Rio Preserve
Join Tucson Audubon and the Town of Marana as we jointly install a large pollinator garden among the landscape plantings near the ramada at the new parking lot for the El Rio Preserve. The heavy lifting has already been done; this work day will be focused entirely on planting. We’ll start off with a quick refresher course on best planting practices for native plants the desert, and then we’ll get to planting.

Pollinator Garden Installation at El Rio Preserve
Join Tucson Audubon and the Town of Marana as we jointly install a large pollinator garden among the landscape plantings near the ramada at the new parking lot for the El Rio Preserve. The heavy lifting has already been done; this work day will be focused entirely on planting. We’ll start off with a quick refresher course on best planting practices for native plants the desert, and then we’ll get to planting.

Sharing Historias: A Day on Immigration and Civil Rights in the US
We will have this event both on July 15th and July 20th. The tour will begin with a showing of Remembering Manzanar, followed by a tour of the scale model and Block 14 which consists of two barracks, one latrine and a mess hall. We will end the tour with lunch (not provided) in the mess hall where a facilitation of a dialogue in regards to past and current civil rights and immigration policies will take place with visitors. The goal of this event is to provide a place of learning and education towards the incarceration of thousands of Japanese Americans during World War II and promote the intersectionality of the rights of all people, especially as Latinxs and/or People of Color. This event will be geared toward paralleling civil rights and immigration policy then within the Japanese/Japanese American community, and today within the Latinx community. Finally, to encourage visitors to preserve this history by sharing the stories of those who were incarcerated in Manzanar with your own community/ies. LCW on the Arizona National Scenic Trail
Join the Arizona Trail Association and the Coronado National Forest in celebrating Latino Conservation Week building new Arizona Trail! We have started a project in Happy Jack, just southeast of Flagstaff, to get the trail off of old forest roads and onto brand new singletrack trail. This is the first major trailbuilding project on the AZT since 2015, and we're especially hoping to get first time trail volunteers and outdoor enthusiasts on board!
Participants should be prepared to walk up to 2 miles over uneven terrain carrying a tool. Tasks include everything from digging and moving big rocks to trimming vegetation and raking dirt. Other jobs include breathing fresh air, enjoying sunshine and getting dirty. No special skills are needed except a desire to work hard and give back to the trail community. Because we will be using heavy tools, please no children under the age of 14 for this event. For other family-friendly events, please contact us at volunteer@aztrail.org.
Lunches and snacks will be provided. Participants should bring a bag or backpack and at least 2 liters of water per person. Personal protection equipment such as work gloves and eye protection is recommended, but we will also provide if you don't have your own.

Who's on First...the New York Cubans! - A Quien le Toca Primero...los cubanos de Nueva York?
In celebration of Latino Conservation Week, Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park will hold a specialized event surrounding the New York Cubans. The New York Cubans were a Negro League Baseball team that played all over the country including Paterson's own Hinchliffe Stadium. There will be a kid's arts and crafts activity where children can make up their own poster advertising a baseball game. Stealing bases was a concept invented by the Negro Leagues. Visitors can also participate in a fun physics game where they try to steal bases, recording their distance, and running time to calculate their speed. These events will take place in Mary Ellen Kramer and Park staff will be there to give a talk about the New York Cuban's history. There will also a story reading at 1:00 and 2:00 in the Welcome Center. Park staff will read the baseball themed book "Who's On First?"

Conejos Rafting The Browns Canyon National Monument
Kido's from around the San Luis Valley in Conejos County Colorado are, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, white water rafting down the amazing Browns Canyon National Monument!!!! Ana Lee Vargas from Conejos Clean Water, a local non-profit community organization in Conejos County CO. said, "Latino Conservation Week, for us, is about creating new opportunities for our communities youth and we are so excited to be able to make this happen this year. Let's GO Rafting!!!"
Browns Canyon includes 11,836 acres of the San Isabel National Forest and 9,750 acres of Bureau of Land Management land. The area is unique, towering over the Arkansas River, itself a beacon to white water rafters and anglers. The granite walls of the canyon stand like a series of a natural cathedral spires that change hues as the light of day wanes. The natural resources star on the monument is the Arkansas River, which provides recreational activity on the river and along the shoreline. The monument area is a recreationist’s dream with plenty of opportunity to raft, kayak, bike, horseback ride, hike, nature watch, photography and stargazing. The river is named a gold medal river for its world-class wild trout fishing. The Arkansas has long been considered the most popular whitewater rafting destination in America and features rapids with names like Canyon Doors, Zoom Flume and Seidel’s Suckhole.

Join us at the Mt. Goliath Nature Center for a mindful day on the mountain during which we will engage in bilingual storytelling specific to our individual and greater connection to the Earth and our natural environment.
The proposed event will feature start with a short, guided walk on the Bristlecone Pine Loop Trail (about ¼ mile) during which we will encourage mindful discussion in preparation for the storytelling circle.
We will follow the guided mindfulness walk with a facilitated storytelling circle with a focus on the narratives surrounding the question, “What does nature mean to you?”
The event as a whole is designed with the purpose of exploring and enhancing our human connection to the Earth in mind. In exploring that human connection, we can empower ourselves and others to connect with the Earth and foster a passion for caring for and conserving our public lands and spaces.
We'll be finishing up by noon, but because of limited picnic/lunch space at the Nature Center for a group lunch, we will NOT be having a group lunch. Those who so wish are encouraged to bring a lunch to enjoy somewhere on the mountain! We will also provide participants with a list of lunch options in Idaho Springs. Before departing, we will be doing a giveaway for some Columbia gear and swag!
We have 15 spots available. The fee to the Nature Center is $10 per car so carpooling is encouraged. Fees will be refunded.

These interns will host around 15 to 20 urban youth by educating them with live birds from the Raptor Trust following up with a bird watch. After lunch, the interns will proceed with an educational presentation about Julia Carabias Lillo, a Mexican Ecologist and Environmentalist then will follow up with a special showing of the documentary Leche y Miel. This summer, governors from across the country will be meeting at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Santa Fe -- and we’ll be there, too, to remind our state executives that more than 25 million children across the country deserve to breathe clean air as they ride buses to school.
Join the Clean Buses for Healthy Niños coalition as we rally outside the NGA meeting calling on lawmakers to fully fund and implement plans to invest Volkswagen settlement money into zero-emission, electric school buses. Parents, students, activists, and supporters from across the country will be traveling to Santa Fe to share their stories and share with governors why they must act now to ensure our children have healthy futures.
On the way to New Mexico our volunteers and leaders will have the chances to stop and celebrate Latino Conservation week by enjoying the outdoors as our caravans make stops at some of our national parks.

Music at the Monument!
Music at the Monument is a nonprofit that offers a concert series in our National Parks and Monuments, performing outreach to local communities. The concert series brings an opportunity to improve access for minority populations who use infrequently our National Parks and Monuments, as well as other priority populations (veterans, youth and seniors). The musical jam sessions achieve these goals by featuring musicians that, after performing, spread the word about the meaning of National Parks as they perform throughout the country. In addition, these concerts feature both local and national performing artists that encourage diverse populations to come to the National Mall. During the 2018 concert season, the Music at the Monument concerts will be held in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
On July 20th, stop by the Lincoln Memorial for some SALSA in celebration of Latino Conservation Week! Check out a performance by Salsa with Silvia, and then join in on the fun!

Campfire, s'mores and activities - what could be better?! This bilingual program will include local information on the seasons and an NPS ranger-led bird call activity for families. Informational tables will showcase local natural resources and history, as well as a photo exhibit: “Latino, Youth, Female, My voice matters.” Raffle prizes too!
