Latino Community Beautification Block Party
On July 15, 2023, MTC will host its Hispanic Heritage Community Beautification Block Party to promote the successful efforts of tree plantation and environmental exposure through partnership with the NJ Tree Foundation. After engaging in a grass-roots two-year projects that empowered residents to organize and make environmental decisions in their neighborhood, MTC planted over 10 trees in its most predominantly Latino community. The block party will not only promote cultural engagement among all Latinos but promote residents' access to tree plantation through onsite planter boxes, flowerpots and representatives from the NJ Tree Foundation. In addition, the block party will host cultural entertainment, food and raffle basket prizes.
The event is free and open to all ages.
From Spring 2021 to Spring 2023, Movimiento Tricolor (MTC) has partnered with the New Jersey (NJ) Tree Foundation to support beautification and environmental exposure to Hispanic communities throughout Camden, New Jersey. With Camden residents fighting against pollution and illegal dumping in a city where high poverty levels exist and over 50% of residents are Hispanic, MTC partnered with the NJ Tree Foundation to combat environmental racism through the plantation of trees. The project has consisted of organizing residents, empowering them to make decisions about tree plant choices and hosting an event where neighbors and volunteers planted over 10 trees themselves. Currently the project is in its final stages partnering with a local artist, Stephanie Rodriguez, who is leading a group of Rutgers University-Camden students to paint the planter boxes for the trees previously planted. The block party will represent the culmination of the project by showcasing the trees donated by the NJ Tree Foundation, planter boxes painted by local university students and will provide information on how residents can conduct a similar project while honoring the Latino community through cultural music, performances and food. On-site services and resources from local environmental and social services organizations will also be on-site to promote social and economic development in the community.

The 2nd Commemoration of the 1942 Harris Neck Community Diaspora
Prior to the establishment of the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge, a small Gullah/Geechee community occupied the lands. In 1942, 75 African American families were displaced by the federal government via eminent domain. Since 1979, descendants of the families have sought for the return of lands that were once owned by their ancestors and the original Harris Neck community -- 2,400 acres. Over the years, various attempts to find a mutually agreeable path forward have failed.
In 2020, the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and the Direct Descendants of Harris Neck Community (DDHNC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and formalized a commitment to mutually agreeable collaboration between the two parties. The FWS has been working together with DDHNC to redefine their relationship, and in partnership, regenerate cultural connections to NWR lands and reconnect descendants with their ancestral histories.
Our event commemorates the 1942 Harris Neck Community Diaspora and this year will be the 80th anniversary of the Diaspora. The event honors the ancestors whom inhabited the Original Harris Neck Community. We hope this event will educate people about Harris Neck but also inspire people to learn about the history of places significant to them.
