¡Juntos Afuera! – An Open Preserve Day
In celebration of Latino Conservation Week, PLT invites everyone and especially the Latino community, to enjoy the outdoors together during this special Open Preserve Day! Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy with the family. Take a walk on the trails with friends. Share the wonders of nature with the next generation. Try your hand at some outdoor games like cornhole that will be on site to play.
Juntos Afuera – Let’s Get Outdoors Together!
This Open Preserve Day is for you to come out and enjoy our Big Hill Preserves on your own! These preserves protect critical unfragmented blue oak woodlands in the Raccoon Creek and Bear River watersheds and are part of one of the last relatively “wild” areas in western Placer County. The trails on these preserves meander past spectacular rock formations, the flowing Raccoon Creek, and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley.
We will provide you with a trail map when you arrive, and from there, you are free to explore the beautiful preserves at your own pace or just find a good spot for a picnic!
Some of the activities you might choose include:
- Enjoy a leisurely nature walk – there are 6.5 miles of trails for you to pick from
- Go on a trail run
- Photograph nature
- Have a picnic – down by the creek or up on a viewpoint
- Do yoga or meditate by the creek, under a tree, or at a viewpoint
- Get creative!

Agua es Vida: Water is Life
Sana sana, Yanaguana. Join us as we kick off Latino Conservation Week in San Antonio, TX with "Agua es Vida; Water is Life," highlighting the importance of protecting our oceans, rivers, and creeks. Celebra con nosotros on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 6:30 PM at Confluence Park, 310 West Mitchell Street.
Rosie Torres, indigenous dancer and choreographer will perform a bilingual reading of the book We Are Water Protectors, written by award-winning Ojibwe author Carole Lindstrom. Ms. Torres will begin the program by leading children and their families through a dynamic Land Acknowledgement filled with movement, song, and a call to the four directions. The reading will be followed by a water ritual at the banks of the river and a nature walk led by the Urban Bird Project (UBP). UBP members will guide children and their families on the proper way to use binoculars and draw attention to the birds and the incredible biodiversity the River supports. Throughout the nature walk, the guides will share water and bird stories rooted in Indigenous wisdom. The goal of this program is to highlight the idea that by protecting our waters, we are protecting life. Registered families will receive a FREE copy of the book We Are Water Protectors and will be invited to share aguas frescas and turtle-shaped conchas.
Water is our most sacred natural resource, and we hope this program will help connect children to nature and encourage them to become defenders of plants, wildlife, and our rivers and creeks these species depend on. Nos vemos pronto!
Agua es Vida; Water is Life is free and open to the public but spots are limited and registration is required. Register HERE: http://bit.ly/3JIoAlU
Free parking provided at Confluence Park (310 W Mitchell). Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, close-toed shoes and bring a reusable water bottle. Limited binoculars will be provided for use during the nature walk.

Wildfire History Webinar with Manuel Lopez
Join Manuel (Mannie) Lopez of the National Forest Foundation for a talk about fire history research in the Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico. In his research, Mannie looks at the growth rings inside trees, which give insight to prehistoric wildfire occurrence, frequency, and area. This can tell us about present day wildfire size and severity compared to the past, and changes in wildfire behavior. Listen in to learn about Mannie’s research and the work NFF is doing to address wildfire challenges.
Mannie was fortunate to be born in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, to multi-generational New Mexicans with a deep respect for open spaces and natural resources. He ventured to northern California where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Physical Geography from Chico State University. He returned to New Mexico where high severity wildfires sparked his inner fire ecologist. He obtained a master’s degree from New Mexico State University, focused on endangered watersheds with potential for post-fire debris flows. Mannie continued his research in Santa Fe, NM with the USGS NM Landscapes Field Station. He is now happy to be applying his knowledge and experience to forested landscapes and communities in his role at the National Forest Foundation.
