In honor of Latino Conservation week, Cruz Ortiz is opening his studio and displaying landscape works on paper and oil paintings. Most of the works depict Texas Parks and Rivers, which were all done en plein air. This is a special and rare presentation of these works. A portion of sales will be donated to Latino Outdoors, a non-profit connecting cultura y community with the outdoors.

Celebrating Latinos Relationship Outside: Bike Utah is excited to invite you to our upcoming SPOKE SERIES DISCUSSION ON JULY 22, 2021, at 7:00pm. This is a conversation with Bike Utah, HEAL Utah, and Latinos Outdoors, who will discuss the Latino community’s relationship with the outdoors during Latino Conservation Week!

Latino Conservation Week was created to support the Latino community by getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources. The Latino community’s relationship with the outdoors is multifaceted, with a lot to celebrate but also with barriers that need to be addressed.

La Semana de la Conservación Latina: Disfrutando y Conservando Nuestra Tierra, fue creada para ayudar a la comunidad latina a salir al aire libre y participar en actividades para proteger nuestros recursos naturales.

Los Padres ForestWatch, Wilderness Youth Project, y Bienestar Latinx lo invitan a un fin de semana de campamento en el espíritu de comunidad, curación y bienestar.

Join Wasatch Community Gardens (WCG) and Artes de México en Utah for a workshop from our joint Sabores de Mi Patria program: ¡Somos lo que comemos: La Milpa / We are what we eat: La Milpa.

We will share valuable cultural knowledge about La Milpa and the Three Sisters through the analysis of the cosmological system of understanding the social relations with nature through the significance that corn and her “sisters” has for the indigenous people.

This workshop will increase participants' understanding and appreciation of the cultural legacy of Milpa and The Three Sisters (which are both traditional systems of growing corn, beans, and squash) as symbols of indigenous identity.

The event will be held at the Wasatch Community Gardens' Campus (629 E. 800 S., SLC). The presentation will be given in Spanish and English. Seating will be limited (though standing room will be available), and water will be provided. Expected program length is 1 hour.

Acompaña a Wasatch Community Gardens y Artes de México en Utah para un taller de nuestro programa conjunto: ¡Sabores de Mi Patria: La Milpa!

Compartiremos valiosos conocimientos culturales sobre La Milpa y las Tres Hermanas a través del análisis del sistema cosmológico de comprensión de las relaciones sociales con la naturaleza a través del significado que tiene el maíz y sus “hermanas” para los indígenas.

Este taller aumentará la comprensión y la apreciación de los participantes del legado cultural de Milpa y Las Tres Hermanas (que son sistemas tradicionales de cultivo de maíz, frijoles y calabaza) como símbolos de la identidad indígena.

El evento será alojado en el campus de Wasatch Community Gardens (629 E. 800 S., SLC). La presentación será en español e ingles. Los asientos serán limitados (aunque habrá espacio disponible para estar de pie) y agua estará disponible. La duración del programa es de 1 hora.

* Reconocemos que nuestra comunidad incluye personas que se encuentran en varios niveles de riesgo de COVID. Este es un evento al aire libre. Latinxhikers & the Appalachian Trail Conservancy are excited to work together to bring you a day filled with beautiful vistas, reflection, and FOOD. We can’t truly celebrate Latino Conservation Week without food, amiright? We want you to showcase your culture and best cooking skills by bringing a dish to share with the group. First, we will hike to the summit of Blood Mtn where we will hang for a bit and reflect on our roles in the conservation movement. We will then return to the trailhead and enjoy each other's yummy creations. We will have coolers and ways to heat up the food once we return from our hike.

¡Dale una mano a la naturaleza! ¡Ven y únete a nosotros en la impresionante Reserva Ecológica Bohemia de 1,000 acres para un día de administración, construcción de comunidad, un poco de ejercicio y algo de diversión! Este fin de semana tendrá nos estaremos enfocando en la conservación de Bohemia a traves de un proyecto comunitario seguido por tiempo libre para disfrutar de este hermoso lugar. Estaremos campando el sábado por la noche y nos despediremos el domingo por la tarde. Todos/as son bienvenidos. 

No se requiere experiencia. LandPaths proporcionará otras herramientas y el equipaje necesario para aquellos/as que lo ocupen. Si tiene herramientas y su propio equipaje de campar en casa, puede traerlas. ¡Sin herramientas eléctricas, por favor!

Nos reuniremos en el estacionamiento del Centro Comunitario de Occidental (3920 Bohemian Highway, Occidental) a las 9 a.m. y una vez que lleguen todos, conduciremos unas 2 millas más para llegar a la Reserva Ecológica Bohemia

Dirreciones para llegar al Centro Comunitario de Occidental: 

Desde Santa Rosa diríjase hacia el oeste por la autopista 12, y luego ve a la direcha a Fulton Rd. y luego inmediatamente ve a la izquierda a Occidental Rd. Permanece en Occidental Rd por 7 millas y luego va a la derecha a Green Hill Rd. En la proxima parada vas a la izquierda a Graton Rd. Permanece en Graton Rd. por otras 3 millas. Cuando lleges a la Bohemian Highway el Centro Comunitario esta a su lado izquierda. 

Que traer:

• su propio almuerzo, botanas y agua
• mochila de día para cargar sus cosas
• Botas resistentes o zapatos cómodos que pueden ensuciar
• Guantes de trabajo (tendremos para prestar)
• Sombrero y protector solar
• Mascarilla y desinfectante de manos
• su propio equipaje para campar si lo tiene. Si necesita equipaje favor de dejarnos saber.

It’s #LatinoConservationWeek and we’re sharing different ways to get active in your community that will help the environment! Everything from picking up trash to volunteering can make a difference.

1. Pick up trash: Trash left out in our communities and in nature can end up in our oceans and rivers. Picking up trash can make a huge impact on local water sources and our drinking water. Make sure you take your trash with you when you’re out in nature!
2. Buy and plant a native plant: Native plants are adapted to our local climate and therefore require less water and no fertilizers. They help reduce air pollution and provide shelter and food for wildlife.
3. Volunteer for an event at the Angeles National Forest: Volunteering not only gives you valuable experiences but can also have a positive impact in your community and public spaces. Take the time to invest in the protection of the Angeles National Forest by joining a team to pick up trash, give interpretive talks, build trails, and study stream conditions!
4. Talk to your friends and family about saving water: Take the time to learn about different ways to conserve water and talk to your friends and family about it. Having knowledge about the importance of saving water and different ways to do so can inspire others to do their part. 
5. Contact your representatives: Contacting your representatives by email, phone, or writing letters expressing your support for environmental legislation like the PUBLIC Lands Act will encourage them to support our work. Make your voice heard!

The Inland Empire is home to beautiful landscapes, mountains, deserts, lakes, and so much more! The purpose of this hiking guide and video is to support #DiversifyOutdoors and encourage the Latino community in the I.E. to enjoy the outdoors. The video and accompanying guide will inform the community of local hikes and provide other outdoor-related resources from camping to advocacy. Both the video and hiking guide will be released on Friday (7/23) at 12pm PST and can be found through the links found below!
