Unpacking Stereotypes and Cultural Barriers: Creating a Latine-Centered Field of Sustainability (Inclusion Blueprint Dialogue)

Diversity in Sustainability and the Hispanic Access Foundation are hosting our first Inclusion Blueprint Dialogue - Unpacking Stereotypes and Cultural Barriers: Creating a Latine-Centered Field of Sustainability on Friday, July 21st, 2023 from 12PM-2PM EST/ 9-11AM PST / 11-1PM CT / 5-7PM GMT.

We’re bringing together Latine sustainability practitioners of various lived and professional experiences to discuss their experience in the industry and how we co-create a sector that preserves and embraces Latine culture and identity.

According to our State of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Sustainability survey conducted in 2021, communities of color are least likely to feel that their workplaces are inclusive or places where they can progress their careers. BIPOC/BAME practitioners may also face difficulties in progression, or finding psychological safety and comfort in the workplace. Barriers to entry and advancement reveal the inherent privilege in the field of sustainability, and there is a need to drive concrete action to better support our practitioners of color. The Latine community in sustainability was more likely to be unemployed than the wider population in sustainability and underrepresented at senior levels of sustainability organizations.

With people of colour disproportionately affected by social and environmental injustice, we need to collectively create an inclusive and equitable sector so that the solutions we create make sense for all. As they say, "Nothing about us, without us." The Inclusion Blueprint Dialogues encourage inquiry and analysis of the sector of sustainability so that we can co-create these solutions. This event will be co-hosted with Diversity in Sustainability and the Hispanic Access Foundation.

Individuals who are interested in attending can sign up here.

About Diversity in Sustainability

Diversity in Sustainability is a network initiated by diverse sustainability professionals aimed at increasing diversity, equity and inclusion within the field of sustainability. We aim to do this by equipping current and future Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) sustainability leaders with the skills, networks and resources to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and just future. We also aim to shift the industry to be more inclusive.
