Join Big Sur Land Trust, the City of Salinas, CSUMB's Habitat Stewardship Project, the Center for Community Advocacy, and community partners as we celebrate the grand opening of the 67-acre Restoration Area at Ensen Community Park!

This free, family-friendly event will feature guided bird walks, a community bike ride, hands-on activities, community resource booths, raffles, and complimentary espresso drinks. Community members of all ages are invited to explore the new restoration area, connect with local organizations, and celebrate this exciting milestone for Salinas.

The restoration area represents the second and final phase of the Ensen Community Project, a transformative effort that has converted land once drained for agriculture into a vibrant landscape where wetlands, wildlife habitat, environmental education, and outdoor recreation thrive together. The project fulfills a long-standing community vision to create more parks and open space in Salinas while restoring a portion of the historic Carr Lake area for both people and nature.

This achievement reflects years of collaboration and community leadership. Since 2018, more than 7,000 residents, community organizations, and local leaders have helped shape the vision for this space, ensuring it serves as a welcoming destination that reflects the values, culture, and aspirations of the Salinas community.

Participants can explore the wetlands through bilingual guided walks, birdwatching, nature talks, hands-on activities, arts and crafts, and interactive science experiences. From discovering the tiny creatures living in the water to learning about the plants and birds that depend on the estuary, there will be something for every age and interest .One of the highlights will be a hands-on experience in the estuary, where participants can help plant 50 native plants, take part in a water quality demonstration, and spend time with biologists. Local conservation experts will help participants understand what these activities reveal about the health and importance of our wetlands. Families can also explore local biodiversity using iNaturalist, connect with conservation organizations, and discover nature up close through specimens, microscopes, field guides, and other educational tools. Join San Diego Bird Alliance and our partners for a fun, free, family-friendly morning celebrating the incredible biodiversity of Mission Bay's wetlands! Explore Kendall-Frost Marsh through hands-on activities and learn about the plants, animals, and habitats that make this ecosystem so special. This bilingual (English/Spanish) community event offers opportunities to connect with nature while contributing to community science during California Biodiversity Day. Whether you're an experienced naturalist or visiting the wetlands for the first time, everyone is welcome!

Meeting Point & Schedule:

The fun kicks off at the Field Station, so come meet us there! We'll start with activities on-site, then head out together as a group to Crown Point, birdwatching along the way. Running late? No worries. Just head straight to the Field Station, where our staff will be waiting to guide you and bring you along with the group. Activities include:Bird-watching walk,Fish seining demonstration, Invertebrate exploration,Native plant walk, Nature observations with iNaturalist,Water quality talk and demonstration Educational activities for all ages What to bring and wear: Water bottle Sunscreen Weather-appropriate attire You might get your feet wet. This event also connects to California’s 30x30 goal, conserving 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030. ? By getting to know the places around us, documenting their biodiversity, and building community, we can be part of the larger conservation story.
