Por Las Olas con Olas Y Acción, Un Paseo Guiado por la Bahía de Biscayne

Únase a miembros de Olas Y Acción y al Instituto de Parques Nacionales de la Bahía de Biscayne para un recorrido en barco en español por Stiltsville en honor a la Semana Latino de la Conservación. Los participantes explorarán la parte más al norte del Parque Nacional Biscayne Bay incluyendo las 6 casas restantes de Stiltsville, aprendiendo sobre la historia y la biodiversidad de esta parte de Miami.

El espacio es limitado para este evento y será elegido por sistema de lotería. Por favor registrar a cada adulto interesado. Si va a estar con niños, envíenos un correo electrónico a: virginiaansaldi@gmail.com

La Semana de Conservación Latina se creó para ayudar a la comunidad latina a salir al aire libre y participar en actividades para proteger nuestros recursos naturales. El Instituto de Parques Nacionales de Biscayne Bay es una asociación única entre el Parque Nacional de Biscayne y su socio oficial sin fines de lucro, la Asociación de Parques Nacionales de Florida. El Instituto ofrece experiencias educativas inmersivas para los visitantes del Parque Nacional Biscayne. Estos programas interactivos enseñan a los visitantes sobre los ecosistemas y la historia del parque y sus alrededores.

Join Olas Y Acción members and the Biscayne National Park Institute for a Spanish-led boat tour of Stiltsville in honor of Latino Conservation Week. Participants will explore the most northern part of Biscayne National Park, including the 6 remaining Stiltsville Houses, learning about the history and biodiversity of this part of Miami.

Latino Conservation Week was created to support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources. Biscayne National Park Institute is a unique partnership between Biscayne National Park and its official nonprofit partner, Florida National Parks Association. The Institute provides immersive, educational experiences for visitors of Biscayne National Park. These interactive programs teach visitors about the ecosystems and history of the park and its surrounding areas.

Plant an Orchid, Save a Bee

As part of Latino Conservation Week, join us at Deering Estate to plant a native, rare orchid in our historic Garden Brook Trail after learn how to protect and help our native bees by building your very own bee hotel. Botanists and naturalists from Fairchild’s Million Orchid Project and UF/IFAS Extension will be present to answer any and all orchid and bee questions.  This event is sponsored by the Coral Pines Garden Club and the Hispanic Access Foundation. This event is for ages 8+.

Caminata guiada por el bosque

John C. and Mariana Jones/Hungryland Wildlife and Environmental Area is a state public land managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to benefit wildlife and provide excellent recreational opportunities to visitors. Popular for fishing and hunting, this area also offers hiking, wildlife viewing, bicycling, horseback riding and camping opportunities.

Our “Caminata guiada por el bosque” event will be led by two FWC biologists who identify as latino/Hispanic, and all information will be provided in both English and Spanish. Biologists will lead Latino Conservation Week guests through approximately 2 miles of pine flatwoods, wet prairies and freshwater marshes as they point out to visitors the local wildlife and native plants while discussing how FWC manages and conserves the land. The guided hike will include a visit to the brand-new Hungryland Wetlands Crossing boardwalk constructed in 2023. The hike will offer guests opportunities to view healthy populations of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, otters, alligators and a wide variety of wading birds. Visitors will be provided with binoculars during the hike for the opportunity the diverse birdlife of the area which includes Bachman’s sparrow, sandhill crane, swallow-tailed kite, and the imperiled limpkin and Everglades snail kite. After the hike, visitors will be invited to share a picnic together while enjoying the outdoors.

Middle Branch Park on July 23 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.

Lotería Nite

Come out to Satwiwa to celebrate latino cultura!

Saturday July22nd from 7pm -930pm at the Satwiwa Native American Cultural Center.

Play Lotería familia style for a chance to win fun prizes!

The cactus corner will be speaking about youth led cactus scrub restoration, giving out Prickly Pear Agua Fresca and bilingual ethnobotany guides. See how you can get involved with youth programs such as SAMO YOUTH and OYE- Oxnard Young Ecologist!

The bat booth is where folks can play echo-loco, use an iPad and a sonar kit to locate bats near the pond, and pick up bilingual bat guides to feed the fascination.

Create seed pinatas and learn about milkweed the host plant for Monarcas, the Monarch Butterfly.

 

The walk in the dark will start as a sunset hike and move into a sensory experience as the evening progresses. We will highlight changes in animal behaviors, sights, and smells as we walk along.

The scorpion hike will highlight scorpions and their habitat. These creatures have fluorescence that makes them glow when under UV lights, come see it to believe it!

Directions to Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center: If coming from Ventura, turn right on Lynn Road. If coming from Los Angeles, turn left on Lynn Road.

Turn left on Via Goleta. Continue all the way to a parking lot where the road ends. Search Sycamore Canyon Trailhead online

Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center: Walk 0.3-miles up gravel road from the main entrance parking area to brown wooden building (Culture Center).
