Event Description:

Nuestra Herencia, Nuestra Tierra- Pedaling for Our Land is a bilingual, family-friendly event hosted by the Idaho Hispanic Foundation as part of Latino Conservation Week and our annual El Grito celebration, which kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month. Families will gather at the Idaho Hispanic Community Center and we will start with a bicycle and helmet fittings and giveaways and allow them the time to decorate their bicycles with nature-inspired and recycled materials before participating in a guided bike ride. Along the route, children and families will face common obstacles which we will help them learn to navigate and they will engage in interactive conservation activities focused on protecting pollinators, wildlife, water resources, and public parks. The event will conclude with more bicycle safety education, healthy refreshments, and conservation resources to help families continue enjoying Idaho's parks and outdoor spaces long after the event.  This is a part of a larger Hispanic Heritage month celebration with El Grito, food and artisan vendors, cultural performances and more.  

Many Latino families face barriers to accessing outdoor recreation, including limited equipment, lack of familiarity with local parks, language barriers, and limited opportunities to participate in culturally welcoming outdoor activities. Our event removes these barriers by providing a free, bilingual, family-centered experience that introduces participants to bike riding and bicycle safety and encourages continued use of Idaho's public spaces. Through conservation education, bicycle safety instruction, helmet distribution, and bicycle giveaways, families will leave with the knowledge, confidence, and equipment needed to enjoy nature beyond the event. By integrating conservation into our Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff celebration, we also demonstrate that caring for our environment is an important part of celebrating our culture and investing in future generations.
