We are pleased to invite you to the first event of a special celebration of Latino Conservation Week! Join us on Sunday, September 15th for an interpretive 3.2-mile hike on the beautiful Harvey Moore to East Side Loop Trail followed by exploration of the Cuyamaca Visitor Center.

8:00 am – Meet at the ABF Administrative Office and drive to trailhead.
9:30 am – Begin hike at Harvey Moore trailhead. Harvey Moore is generally considered an easy route and takes an average of 1 h 24 min to complete. This scenic trail offers stunning views, diverse flora, and the opportunity to spot local wildlife. You can find more information at this link.
11:00 am – Finish Hike and have brown bag lunch at trailhead. Please bring your own lunch and snacks.
11:30 am – Drive to the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Visitor Center.
12:00 pm – Regroup at the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Visitor Center. After the hike, we will explore the Cuyamaca Visitor Center, where we will learn about the local ecosystem, the rich history of the area, and the various recreational opportunities available.
1:00 pm – Drive back to the ABF Administrative Office.

About the Field Trip Leaders:
Lizbeth Bárcena has been camping, hiking, and exploring the Anza-Borrego Desert for over 17 years. Originally from Guadalajara, she grew up in a quiet San Joaquin Valley town in Alta California, halfway between Yosemite and San Francisco. She studied architecture at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and has 20 years of experience working on local and international architectural projects. She splits her time between Los Angeles and Borrego Springs, where she volunteers for organizations in the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. An urbanite by profession but a desert lover at heart, she is dedicated to conserving and preserving our natural environment and bringing awareness of the wonders and fragility of nature through the arts. She is a certified California Naturalist and certified in Regenerative Building. She is a multidisciplinary artist experimenting with clay forms and writing. She is enrolled in a Creative Writing Certificate program at UCLA Extension and is pursuing an MFA in Nature Writing. She is working on her first literary fiction novel set in this desert.
Born and raised between Thermal and the San Fernando Valley in California, Stacy Valdez’s journey is characterized by a blend of academic achievements, professional roles, and a profound dedication to social causes. Stacy has built a diverse and impactful career with a strong foundation in education and a commitment to community engagement and service. They have been involved in humanitarian efforts through Border Kindness since 2018, reflecting their passion for the outdoors, advocacy, language, and cultural studies. Join Great River Greening in celebrating Latino Conservation Week at Garlough Park School Forest West St. Paul. In recent years, significant habitat restoration work has been carried out in Garlough Park with the aim of creating native forests and pollinator plantations for the enjoyment of the public and students at the adjacent primary school. This event will continue that effort by removing regrowth of the invasive buckthorn and establishing the native forest floor by spreading grass seeds. 

This is a family-friendly event. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we will provide the tools and training required. Volunteers can expect an easy, flat walk from parking/ facilities to work areas.

There will be light snacks and extra water available during the event. Please bring your own reusable water bottle. In addition, bring your work/gardening gloves if you have them, if not they will be provided.

If the event has reached capacity, please add your name to the waitlist and you will be automatically registered if space becomes available. If you are a minor registering yourself, you will need to provide an email address in the "Linked Survey" box so we can send a Youth Liability Waiver to your parent or guardian. If you are an adult bringing a minor, you can add them as an attendee and simply check the "Youth Waiver" box upon registering. If you are an adult registering yourself and another adult, you will need to enter their unique email address to the Attendee registration, so they can confirm their registration and electronically sign their own waivers.

DAY OF:  Please arrive promptly, allowing time for parking and a short walk to check in. When you check-in, you will be oriented to the site and restoration activities.

LOCATION:  Additional details and directions will be sent out in the weeks leading up to the event. Keep an eye out for updates from GivePulse or Great River Greening.

SAFETY: Ensuring the safety of our volunteers is our highest priority. It is important that event participants wear close-toed shoes and long sleeves to protect against ticks and scratchy brush. We recommend dressing for the weather, layers are key. We will hold the event rain or shine.

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week at Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary with free admission on Saturday, September 21. Mexican frozen treats and other food and drink items will be available for purchase in the Blair Visitor Center. With exhibits, artwork, and bird-friendly gardens, the Blair Visitor Center is the gateway to an enchanting wilderness with giant cypress trees that have lived here for nearly 600 years. From there, you can begin your journey on the 2.25-mile boardwalk, meandering through pine flatwood, wet prairie, around a marsh, and finally into the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America.

This beautiful area just outside of Reno is lush with blooming wildflowers, has plenty of shade from the pines, and the creek is rushing with crystal clear water. This hike will be family friendly and guided by Meg Tait our Bilingual (English and Spanish) Stewardship Coordinator. More details below and an email will be sent out a week before the event. If you are Latino or know of Latinos who might be interested, please spread the word and let’s get everyone disfrutado y conservando nuestra tierra (to enjoy and protect out earth)!

To honor and give thanks to our partners who bring Latino Conservation Week (LCW) to life, we will be hosting our annual Partner of the Year, virtual awards ceremony to celebrate the closing of Latino Conservation Week and crown our partner of the year! The awards will be 1hr long and will feature speakers, virtual activities and a look back at the hard work of our LCW participants. 

This year, Hispanic Access will be hosting a private reception entitled, Semillas de Cambio/ Seed of Change to bring together NYC area partners, congressional offices, allies, and community members to celebrate 11 years of Latino Conservation Week. We welcome our guests to focus on mingling while dining on light bites. sipping on casual refreshments/beverages and enjoying music, and other opportunities to network and celebrate in community.

Please note: This event is invite-only and not open to the general public.

Muir Woods National Monument, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), and National Park Service (NPS) welcomes Latino Conservation week with a suite of tabling and programs led by Latino park employees. The day's event offerings include tabling conducted by natural resources and its Latino employees from wildlife biology, vegetation restoration, and aquatics. Additional divisions and employees include interpretation and community outreach. There is a planned easy to moderate guided hike through by Muir Woods park rangers (hike details to be announced soon). Visitors can pick up junior ranger books and earn a junior ranger badge and more Muir Woods specific items.

In addition to connecting Latino visitors to Latinos in conservation, goals for the day include helping bridge visitors to their national monument and providing an understanding of how they can connect to their park and the lessons they can take with them back to their communities.

What’s in the garden? Swing by and find out what’s blooming and buzzing. Pitch in with gardening tasks and enjoy a refreshing paleta, a frozen treat. Meet at the Garden Gate, right next to the Round Barn. All gardening tools provided. All ages. Parent participation required. This is a drop-in program; no registration is required. Running 175 miles, the Salinas river is an upside-down river. There, present, supporting the whole valley, but hard to see and acknowledge by human eyes. Its existence has been suppressed by design, hidden behind fences, absorbed by sprinkles, and disconnected from its plains. This event celebrates the Salinas River and invites the community to relate with it, immersing themselves in its nature. The goal is to spend the day, from 9 am to 3 pm, in a field trip that includes three different locations along the river where participants will have the opportunity to learn from experts about hydrology, ecology, and alternative forms of river management focused on nature-based solutions and environmental justice. At the end of the field trip we will have a short workshop modeling the river in the sand to understand movements of water and sediments, and share visions and desires for the river. The event is free and transportation, snacks and materials will be provided. Please RSVP here. 

Join us as Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship (SCMTS) kicks off our Dig Day season with a day of impactful trail work at the stunning Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument! This event, held in honor of Latino Conservation Week 2024, is a perfect opportunity to celebrate and honor the contributions of the Latino community in preserving and enjoying our natural spaces.

At SCMTS, we believe that trails are a gateway to the adventure, healing, exercise, and meditation the great outdoors offers. Our work expands and enhances sustainable trail networks so everyone has a place to enjoy and protect the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Under the guidance of our professional trail crew, volunteers will engage in new trail construction and finishing at CCD, ensuring that our trails will be safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you're an experienced trail worker or new to trail stewardship, this event offers a hands-on opportunity to learn new skills, meet like-minded outdoor enthusiasts, and give back to the beautiful landscapes we all cherish.

We are especially excited to be a part of Latino Conservation Week, a time dedicated to encouraging the Latino community to connect with and protect our natural heritage. By participating in this event, you are helping to foster a more inclusive and diverse outdoor community, and ensuring that the Santa Cruz Mountains continue to be a place of adventure, healing, and connection for generations to come.

Inicia la Semana de Conservación Latina con este programa en el río Poudre #LCW2024

Dónde: En el sendero Poudre Trail. Estaciónate en las canchas de tenis en el parque Lee Martinez y sigue el sendero pavimentado hacia el oeste hasta que llegues a una pequeña playa en el lado norte del sendero.

Cuándo: Sábado 14 de septiembre de 9:30 am a 12 pm.

Se recomienda inscripción, pero no es obligatoria. Solo los participantes inscritos serán notificados si el programa se cancela o pospone.

Descripción del programa: Utiliza redes y bandejas de recolección para descubrir qué vive debajo de la superficie del río Cache la Poudre. Tendremos biólogos disponibles para ayudar a identificar tus hallazgos. Se proporcionará todo el equipo.

Accesibilidad: El programa se lleva a cabo casi en su totalidad en un sendero para bicicletas pavimentado, accesible fácilmente para cualquier dispositivo de movilidad. Máximo 1 milla, ida y vuelta. Baños disponibles cerca del área de juegos del Parque Lee Martinez.

Join the Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance (VVMTA)’s Soul Dirt, Eagle Valley Outdoor Movement (EVOM) & My Future Pathways for a day of trail work led entirely in Spanish! Help take care of the trails, enjoy some fresh air and meet some new friends! Food and drink provided. All ages welcome. Transportation to the trailhead available.

Please wear long pants & closed toed shoes, and bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water & work gloves (if you have them).

Volunteers will work with the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance's Stewardship Team on public lands in the West Desert in Utah!

To support participation, $450 scholarships are awarded to applicants joining as a part of Latino Conservation Week. Additional gas stipends or carpools will be provided. And all tools, gloves and camping equipment are provided as well.

"SUWA acknowledges the structural barriers many communities face when seeking solace in wild, natural places. Our Stewardship Scholarship program offers scholarships to students who join an immersive stewardship project on public lands in Utah with SUWA. Stewardship Scholars join a two-day project, working with other volunteers and SUWA staff to manage wilderness hands-on."

Volunteers will camp for 2, 3 or 4 nights (depending on preference) learning about land management on some of Utah's most beautiful landscapes. Our crew will travel far and wide across the West Desert assessing and remediating vehicle and camping compliance. We will work to protect native vegetation, animal habitat and the ecological integrity of vast landscapes. Tasks will vary by need and may include: sign installation, raking and picking, and team-carrying boulders and trees. There are jobs for all people of all abilities!

Apoyo para participar:

¿De qué se trata?

SUWA reconoce las barreras que enfrentan muchas comunidades para disfrutar de los espacios naturales. Por eso, nuestro programa de Becas de Voluntario de Campo ofrece apoyo a estudiantes para que participen en un proyecto intensivo en tierras públicas de Utah.

Los becarios trabajarán junto a otros voluntarios y personal de SUWA durante dos días para aprender y contribuir activamente al cuidado de la naturaleza.

¡Aventura en el Desierto!

Pasarás de campamento de 2 a 4 noches (tú eliges) aprendiendo sobre el manejo de tierras en algunos de los paisajes más hermosos de Utah. Trabajaremos en diferentes zonas del Desierto Oeste para revisar y mejorar el uso responsable de vehículos y campamentos. Nuestro objetivo es proteger la vegetación nativa, el hábitat de los animales y la integridad ecológica de estos vastos paisajes.

Las tareas variarán según las necesidades del momento y pueden incluir: instalar carteles, rastrillar y recoger basura, o trabajar en equipo para transportar rocas y árboles. ¡Hay trabajo para todas las personas y habilidades!
