Participants can explore the wetlands through bilingual guided walks, birdwatching, nature talks, hands-on activities, arts and crafts, and interactive science experiences. From discovering the tiny creatures living in the water to learning about the plants and birds that depend on the estuary, there will be something for every age and interest .One of the highlights will be a hands-on experience in the estuary, where participants can help plant 50 native plants, take part in a water quality demonstration, and spend time with biologists. Local conservation experts will help participants understand what these activities reveal about the health and importance of our wetlands. Families can also explore local biodiversity using iNaturalist, connect with conservation organizations, and discover nature up close through specimens, microscopes, field guides, and other educational tools. Join San Diego Bird Alliance and our partners for a fun, free, family-friendly morning celebrating the incredible biodiversity of Mission Bay's wetlands! Explore Kendall-Frost Marsh through hands-on activities and learn about the plants, animals, and habitats that make this ecosystem so special. This bilingual (English/Spanish) community event offers opportunities to connect with nature while contributing to community science during California Biodiversity Day. Whether you're an experienced naturalist or visiting the wetlands for the first time, everyone is welcome!

Meeting Point & Schedule:

The fun kicks off at the Field Station, so come meet us there! We'll start with activities on-site, then head out together as a group to Crown Point, birdwatching along the way. Running late? No worries. Just head straight to the Field Station, where our staff will be waiting to guide you and bring you along with the group. Activities include:Bird-watching walk,Fish seining demonstration, Invertebrate exploration,Native plant walk, Nature observations with iNaturalist,Water quality talk and demonstration Educational activities for all ages What to bring and wear: Water bottle Sunscreen Weather-appropriate attire You might get your feet wet. At our Compost Hubs, food scraps collected from the community are transformed into nutrient-rich compost, and we need your help to make it happen! As a Compost Hub Support Volunteer, you’ll gain hands-on experience working alongside our knowledgeable Compost Managers. Get ready to leave feeling accomplished, a little sweaty, and brimming with new compost knowledge.

ABOUT ACTIVITY:
Roll up your sleeves and dive into a variety of engaging activities, whether it’s managing a three-bin system, tending to a compost pile, sifting finished compost, or exploring a mix of everything. There’s something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned pros! Plus, our Compost Hubs are situated in LA County’s most cherished green spaces: community gardens, urban farms, and beautiful parks. Join passionate community composters, learn to turn food scraps into rich compost, and connect with the local food system.

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week with a special bilingual edition of Reading with a Ranger at Mission Trails Regional Park. City of San Diego Park Ranger Elizabeth Delgado will lead a family-friendly storytime presented in both English and Spanish, giving young visitors a fun way to connect with nature, wildlife and the park. Families are invited to settle in, listen together and learn more about the natural world through stories and conversation.

Let's take a walk and practice birding in English and Spanish! Binoculars are available to borrow. Walk is approximately 1.5 miles on flat, rocky trails. For adults and children ages 7 and up. Free.

Join us for a fun afternoon! Our youth and family-friendly event seeks out Coachella Valley youth of all ages to register to visit the Whitewater Preserve accompanied by our COFEM Conservation Program Lead to learn more about water conservation, habitat and aquifer restoration in the Coachella Valley. Walk along the river, discover a new habitat and engage with other likeminded folks.

Transportation, food and drinks will be provided. 

Dress in closed toe shoes and bring your own water bottle. We will have some cold water onsite.

Our Water Conservation Walk is supported by a Latino Conservation Week grant from Hispanic Access Foundation.
