 On Saturday, September 14, Luis Rubio-Aguilar will guide a neighborhood nature hike followed by lunch and a paddle session in South Lake Tahoe. Luis will teach participants about the amazing local trees and wildlife here in South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Basin. Then, we’ll head to the beach for a free lunch, followed by a paddle session on Lake Tahoe. Participants can choose from a double kayak or a paddle board, and a lifeguard will be present.

 Attendance is not required at all portions of the day, but we hope you’ll join us for all three!

 About Luis:

 When Luis Rubio-Aguilar was 10 years old, he migrated from his birthplace in Jalisco, Mexico, to the Lake Tahoe area. Growing up there was an awesome experience for a kid: He got to ski, camp, ride bikes, play ball, and enjoy the beach. At 12 years old, he started skiing at Homewood Mountain Resort, where he fell in love with it. He has now worked in the ski industry for more than 10 years, and with his PSIA Level 2 Alpine certification, he enjoys coaching and teaching kids in one of his favorite sports. He is also a camp guide (bilingual), mentor, and musician. He spends a lot of his free time in woods and meadows identifying plants, flowers, and mushrooms and learning about their uses and their roles in nature. Time in the woods gives him peace of mind, an opportunity to reflect, and a sense of how complex life is. The more he learns about that, the more in touch he feels with himself and with life’s challenges. Having faced his own share of challenges, both when growing up and as an adult, he hopes the experiences he can share with students and peers will offer both knowledge and understanding.

Fifth-graders from throughout Eagle County who attend public and private schools or receive homeschool education gather at a common location for a day full of all things water.  When the event started back in 2019, it was part of the Eagle Valley Outdoor Movement – a coalition that breaks down the barriers of outdoor recreation – with the goal to teach our young students about local rivers and streams and inspire a curiosity for nature. Students learn all about water through hands-on exploratory activities. Activities include fly fishing, water safety, macro-invertebrate searching, and how water treatment works. Each student visits 5 stations throughout the day and local community experts lead each station.

Nature Walk and WaterWorks Museum Tour – Connect with the outdoors and learn more about Southern Nevada water resources in this bilingual tour. Take a walk through the Springs Preserve’s trail system, native habitats, and archaeological sites before touring an active pump station where you can learn where our water comes from, how it’s delivered, and how our community conserves it! Springs Preserve Garden Party – Join us for a fun, family-friendly event at the Springs Preserve. Enjoy a 20-minute bilingual garden lessons on what to grow in your backyard this fall, along with drop-in activities for kids to learn all about desert gardening – including what kinds of critters live in the garden, how plants grow, and how to conserve water! Take advantage of these exciting outdoor activities, enjoy some treats and take home a children’s garden kit (limited quantities available). Inicia la Semana de Conservación Latina con este programa en el río Poudre #LCW2024

Dónde: En el sendero Poudre Trail. Estaciónate en las canchas de tenis en el parque Lee Martinez y sigue el sendero pavimentado hacia el oeste hasta que llegues a una pequeña playa en el lado norte del sendero.

Descripción del programa: Utiliza redes y bandejas de recolección para descubrir qué vive debajo de la superficie del río Cache la Poudre. Tendremos biólogos disponibles para ayudar a identificar tus hallazgos. Se proporcionará todo el equipo.

Únase a Great River Greening en la celebración de la Semana Latina de Conservación en Garlough Park School Forest West St. Paul. En los últimos años, se han llevado a cabo importantes trabajos de restauración del hábitat en Garlough Park con el objetivo de crear bosques nativos y plantaciones de polinizadores para el disfrute del público y los estudiantes de la escuela primaria adyacente. Este evento continuará ese esfuerzo mediante la eliminación de los rebrotes del arbusto invasor y el establecimiento nativo del suelo del bosque mediante la propagación de semillas de pasto. Gracias por marcar la diferencia en conservación mientras disfrutas de un gratificante día en la naturaleza.

Este es un evento familiar. Join Great River Greening in celebrating Latino Conservation Week at Garlough Park School Forest West St. Paul. In recent years, significant habitat restoration work has been carried out in Garlough Park with the aim of creating native forests and pollinator plantations for the enjoyment of the public and students at the adjacent primary school. This event will continue that effort by removing regrowth of the invasive buckthorn and establishing the native forest floor by spreading grass seeds. 

This is a family-friendly event. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we will provide the tools and training required. Volunteers can expect an easy, flat walk from parking/ facilities to work areas.

There will be light snacks and extra water available during the event. Please bring your own reusable water bottle. In addition, bring your work/gardening gloves if you have them, if not they will be provided.

If the event has reached capacity, please add your name to the waitlist and you will be automatically registered if space becomes available. If you are a minor registering yourself, you will need to provide an email address in the "Linked Survey" box so we can send a Youth Liability Waiver to your parent or guardian. If you are an adult bringing a minor, you can add them as an attendee and simply check the "Youth Waiver" box upon registering. If you are an adult registering yourself and another adult, you will need to enter their unique email address to the Attendee registration, so they can confirm their registration and electronically sign their own waivers.

DAY OF:  Please arrive promptly, allowing time for parking and a short walk to check in. When you check-in, you will be oriented to the site and restoration activities.

LOCATION:  Additional details and directions will be sent out in the weeks leading up to the event. Keep an eye out for updates from GivePulse or Great River Greening.

SAFETY: Ensuring the safety of our volunteers is our highest priority. It is important that event participants wear close-toed shoes and long sleeves to protect against ticks and scratchy brush. We recommend dressing for the weather, layers are key. We will hold the event rain or shine.

RELEASE OF LIABILITY:  All volunteers participating in Great River Greening events release Great River Greening and its employees, officers, directors, or agents from any and all liability from claims of any nature whatsoever arising from participation the extent such liability is directly attributable to the negligence of GRG, or its respective employees, officers, directors or agents.

About the Field Trip Leaders:
Flor Gomez is a mother and wife and a special educator by profession. Two years ago, her family and she moved to Borrego Springs, and she couldn't resist starting to explore this beautiful park. She loves being surrounded by nature, really enjoys hiking, and watching sunsets. Flor considers herself an extremely friendly person, and she is currently studying English so she can make more friends.

Born and raised between Thermal and the San Fernando Valley in California, Stacy Valdez’s journey is characterized by a blend of academic achievements, professional roles, and a profound dedication to social causes. Stacy has built a diverse and impactful career with a strong foundation in education and a commitment to community engagement and service. They have been involved in humanitarian efforts through Border Kindness since 2018, reflecting their passion for the outdoors, advocacy, language, and cultural studies. Their love for the environment began at an early age, growing once she moved to the San Fernando Valley, where she identified her love for the mountains and hiking and camping. Stacy is dedicated to promoting the outdoors to underserved youth and their communities.
