Latinx Conversation to Conservation

Being a minority student aspiring to work in a conservation related field is challenging due to lack of representation and exposure to diverse pathways that may lead to a rewarding career. Higher education institutions play an important role in breaching this gap for minority students. Join us on a panel with current and recently graduated students as they talk about their experience in internships and programs that helped expose them to diverse opportunities in conservation related work with different state and federal land management agencies.

Coffee Plantations and Wild Birds in Colombia

In this webinar, we will discuss the impact of shade grown coffee on bird conservation in Quindío, Colombia from a local perspective. Colombia is home to the largest diversity of birds in the entire world and particularly impacted by the drastic and horrifying downwards trend in bird populations worldwide since 1970. Deforestation in tropical regions due to agriculture contributes to loss of habitat. We will get a chance to speak with Alberto Córdoba from Finca La Palmera about how he has conserved native guadua stands on his third generation family farm in Quindío and taken action to produce only organic, shade grown bird friendly coffee. We will discuss what shade grown coffee is, why it is important and how you as a coffee consumer can help protect wild birds.

Mariposas Monarcas y Plantas

We plan to reach the Latino community with a multi-faceted, one-hour webinar in English and Spanish with several components that all work together to showcase the value of native plants and pollinators (especially hummingbirds and monarchs) in their local neighborhoods. We’ll show pictures of the existing native plant restoration project that we have been working in OVRP and give an update to the folks that volunteered to plant these natives in early 2020.

We will also translate existing San Diego Audubon Education activities and resources into Spanish, and share those for free with the webinar participants if they are looking for family-friendly activities over the summer. We’ll partner with the California Native Plant Society San Diego Chapter to share tips for growing native milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis and A. speciosa) at home and explain the lifecycle of milkweeds and monarchs. This live portion of the webinar will be in Spanish, as well. We’ll include information and stories about how to take care of Monarch caterpillars if their milkweeds attract them, show a video/photos of raising Monarch butterflies and releasing them, and we’ll include links to community science projects that are collecting information on our rapidly dwindling (December 2020 is when the USFWS decision on listing Monarchs is due) western population of Monarchs (https://www.monarchmilkweedmapper.org/, and/or https://transom.org/2013/google-earth-tour-monarch-butterflies/).

Beforehand, we’ll send webinar participants who have signed up a care package with narrow-leaved and/or showy milkweed seeds, brochures on where to buy more, information on how to plant them, as well as bird guide brochures in Spanish. At the end of the webinar, we will give away 10 Spanish bird guides by doing a free raffle and mailing the guides.

Melt and Pour Soap Making Workshop

In order to celebrate Latino Conservation week this workshop is free and available to the public! We will talk about the history, chemistry, and conservation aspects of soap making! We will be using the melt and pour technique, no lye or chemicals involved. They are fun to make, and they make great gifts! Get your family together for a creative evening, or make new friends (online) while learning a new craft.

Appropriate for ages 7 and up with parental supervision. This technique is often thought of as an introduction to soap making. Many people move on to cold process soap making. But many people also just enjoy the melt and pour technique as well! Register in advance to reserve your materials! A majority of materials, shipping, and virtual instruction are included.

In order to register please contact Sasha Azeez at Sasha_Azeez@Fws.gov!

We will be shipping out supplies so please include your name, phone number, and shipping address. Materials you will need that are not included: rubbing alcohol, a microwave or supplies for a double broiler, A cutting instrument, and bowls. Two kits available per household. Use instruments that you are able to part with. Many people have dedicated soap making supplies, because some fragrances and additives stay with the objects. Especially if they are made with porous material. AKA don’t use your favorite bowl or try to make cupcakes with the silicon molds that are provided.
