Join Bayou City Waterkeeper, FotoFest, and Latino Outdoors for a guided photo walk exploring the connections among water, birds, people, and place.

Participants will walk through Robert C. Stuart Park, an area that provides habitat for resident and migratory birds while also demonstrating how natural and nature-based infrastructure can help manage stormwater, reduce flooding, improve water quality, and support healthier ecosystems.

No photography experience or specialized equipment is required. Participants may use a phone, digital camera, film camera, or simply join the walk to observe. Along the route, guides will invite participants to look closely at the wetland landscape: the movement of water, the plants and wildlife that depend on it, evidence of human intervention, and the relationships connecting the park to the surrounding city.

The program is presented in connection with FotoFest’s fall exhibition, Across the Americas: FotoFest, Latin America and Latino Cultures in the United States. Drawing from the exhibition’s consideration of landscape, territory, identity, history, and extraction, the walk will explore photography as a way to document place, reflect on environmental change, and imagine more reciprocal relationships between people and the natural world.

This event also overlaps with Latino Conservation Week, a national initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation that celebrates Latino communities’ relationships with the outdoors and their leadership in protecting land, water, air, and wildlife. 

Together, participants will consider what becomes visible when we slow down and pay attention, and how images can help us better understand, value, and protect the shared habitats around us. After the walk, participants will be invited to stay for refreshments and a kid-friendly activity station. This event is free with registration.

Photography equipment and binoculars are optional. Participants are welcome to attend simply to walk, observe, and learn. 

 

About Across the Americas: FotoFest, Latin America and Latino Cultures in the United States

FotoFest’s fall 2026 exhibition, Across the Americas: FotoFest, Latin America and Latino Cultures in the United States, explores FotoFest’s long-standing engagement with artists across Latin America and Latino cultures in the U.S. Featuring work by more than forty artists, the exhibition embraces diverse photographic approaches to history, place, imagination, and identity.

Organized into four thematic chapters, Image and the Constructed Self; Memory, Archive, and History; Place, Territory, and Transformation; and Experimental Worlds: Concept and Fiction, the project brings together documentary, conceptual, and experimental practices that illuminate shared histories and cultural dialogues across Latin America and Latino cultures in the U.S.

The galleries will not be organized strictly around medium or geography. Instead, the historical and contemporary works will present a multi-faceted conversation between different times and histories. Unexpected pairings will revisit many of the ways FotoFest has fostered diverse discourse between generations of artists, national histories, and photographic traditions over the past four decades in Latin America and Latino Cultures in the United States.

9am - 1pm Visit the cooling station east of the administration building to meet exhibitors from Chino Basin Water Conservation District, Lopez Urban Farm, Growing Roots, and Bloom Wild Bookshop as well as hands-on activities for all ages. Pick up a scavenger hunt about the different water features in the Garden on your way in for some fun for the whole family!

A limited number of free tickets are available for public general admission so reserve your tickets ahead of time!

Admission tickets for the public (non-members) are valid for the entire day during our opening hours (8 AM to 7 PM): there is no specific entry time or duration of your visit.  

Members may enter free at any time, without a reservation.

Connecting urban and rural communities between Nampa and Boise, this inclusive 5K invites participants of all ages and abilities to run or walk a scenic route through a Meridian park. Hosted alongside the Latino/Latine Run Club in celebration of Latino Conservation Week, the event combines outdoor movement with cultural vibrancy, featuring an energizer warm-up, live music, dance, local vendors, and food. The initiative aims to raise awareness of Idaho’s natural spaces, provide environmental resources, and foster long-term community stewardship of local parks.

This opportunity is for those individuals who identify as Latine/o descent and primarily speak Spanish/Spanglish.  This stewardship day is intended to provide a space for Latine/o, also BIPOC to build community while speaking/practicing speaking in Spanish. 

Esta oportunidad es para aquellas personas que se identifican como de ascendencia latina y hablan principalmente español/spanglish.  Estos días de voluntario tiene la intención de proporcionar un espacio para que los latinos y personas de color, construyen una comunidad mientras hablan/practican el español.

This event is a one-night camping trip designed to provide BIPOC families with hands-on outdoor experiences, including camping skills workshops, interpretive programs, and community-building activities. It aims to remove barriers to outdoor access by offering free gear, meals, bilingual facilitation in English and Spanish and a dedicated affinity space outdoors. Some of the hands-on workshops include fire by friction, fire safety, tent and kitchen setup, guided walks, and games.

Este evento es un viaje de campamento de una noche diseñado para proporcionar a las familias BIPOC experiencias prácticas al aire libre, incluyendo talleres de habilidades para acampar, programas interpretativos y actividades de construcción de la comunidad. Su objetivo es eliminar las barreras al acceso al aire libre ofreciendo equipo gratuito, comidas, facilitación bilingüe en inglés y español y un espacio de afinidad dedicado al aire libre. The event will feature tables hosted by community partners about birds, plants, aquatics and more, and guided walks with local naturalists to learn about the environment and ongoing restoration. Join the Latine Environmental Colectivo for a fun and leisurely nature walk at Forest Hill Park in celebration of Latino Conservation Week! Participants will connect with nature and community while learning about native plant species and the importance of protecting and restoring our local environment. Along the way, we’ll play nature-themed bingo and explore the plants, wildlife, and natural spaces that make our community special. This family-friendly event is an opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate the relationship between Latino communities and the environment. Rooted in Nature, Thriving in Community!

 

¡Acompáñanos con Latine Environmental Colectivo para una caminata divertida y relajada por Forest Hill Park en celebración de la Semana de la Conservación Latina! Los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de conectarse con la naturaleza y la comunidad mientras aprenden sobre las especies de plantas nativas y la importancia de proteger y restaurar nuestro medio ambiente local. Durante la caminata, jugaremos bingo de naturaleza y exploraremos las plantas, la vida silvestre y los espacios naturales que hacen especial a nuestra comunidad. Trail Work

Acompáñenos el Sábado, el 10 de Octubre a las 10 de la mañana para celebrar Día de los Muertos y la fauna de Nueva Jersey. Vamos a hacer los alebrijes con nuestra educadora bilingüe, Jasleen. Este evento es perfect para las familias de las edades 3-8.

¡Este evento es perfecto para las familias que quieren honorar las tradiciones latinoamericanas, crear juntas, y pasar tiempo en naturaleza! 

Qué está incluído: 

• El minicuento de Yo Recuerdo Mi Abuelo - Empiezan con un cuento breve de 10 minutos sobre el Día de los Muertos, leído en español. 
• Hacer manualidades - Van a hacer Los alebrijes usando materiales provistas por Cedar Run. 
• Conocer una fauna - Conocen a uno de nuestros búhos residentes en una experiencia íntima, en la que pueden verlo muy cercano y personal. 
• El Tour de Las Viviendas - Caminan por las viviendas de nuestra fauna mientras cuentan las historias de nuestros animales.

Colorful Creatures: Alebrije Workshop

Join us on Saturday, October 10th, at 10 am to celebrate Day of the Dead and New Jersey wildlife by making "alebrijes" with our bilingual educator, Jasleen. This event is perfect for families with children aged 3-8! 

This event is perfect for families that want to celebrate Latin American traditions, craft together, and spend time in nature as a family! 

What's included: 

• Storybook Reading of "I remember my abuelo" - We will begin with a brief 10 minute reading about the Day of The Dead, read in Spanish. 
• Hands-on craft activity - Building wildlife "alebrijes" or colorful hybrid animals using materials provided by Cedar Run 
• Wildlife Meet and Greet - Meet one of our resident animals up close and personal.
• Wildlife Housing Area Tour - Walk as a family through our wildlife housing area as we explore the cultural significance of our animals in Latin America!
