This transformative airboat experience seeks to reconnect Hispanic organizations and communities in Central Florida with our precious Everglades ecosystem. It is vital that the Hispanic community understands that the health of local wetlands directly impacts the water supply for more than 8 million people in Florida. The expedition is not just recreational; it includes a guided talk on the impact of urban development on river headwaters and the importance of protecting wetlands from pollution and habitat fragmentation.

Water Connects Us: Conservation Open Space Area (COSA) Tour

The Conservation Open Space Area (COSA) is a 24.8 acre wetland and alkali meadow upland located on the Bishop Paiute Reservation. Join Brianda Hernandez Rosales, Water
Quality Program Coordinator for the Bishop Paiute Tribe for a tour of the COSA. Learn about the conservation, research, education and outdoor recreation that the land was intended for.
Take a walk on the 1.2 mile walking path and enjoy the plethora of unique plants and wildlife present on the refuge. Pre-register at ourwaterstory.org/events

 

Excursión a COSA

El Área de Conservación y Espacios Abiertos (COSA, por sus siglas en inglés) es un humedal y pradera alcalina de 24,8 acres situado en la Reserva Bishop Paiute. Acompañe a Brianda Hernandez Rosales, coordinadora del Programa de Calidad del Agua de la Tribu Bishop Paiute, en un recorrido por el COSA. Conozca las actividades de conservación, investigación, educación y recreación al aire libre para las que fue destinado este terreno.

Recorra el sendero de 1,2 millas y disfrute de la gran variedad de plantas y fauna únicas que este refugio alberga. Inscríbase previamente en ourwaterstory.org/events.

21st Annual Butterfly Festival

Join us at the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library on September 19th from 9:30 am to 3 pm for the 21st Annual Lawson Roberts Butterfly Festival! This event is free and open to the public. 

Learn how we tag Monarch butterflies as we send them off on their journey to Mexico, or challenge yourself to our Monarch Migration game! We will have a butterfly storytime, face painting, a butterfly walk and scavenger hunt, crafts, pollinator friendly seeds, an edible insect station and lots of resources for native gardens and gardening for pollinators!

Symbolic Monarch Migration Craft

For this years Latino Conservation Week, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Library is partnering with the Hispanic Access Foundation to offer a fun and artistic way to learn more about monarch butterflies. Come and design a paper butterfly that will be sent over to a classroom in Mexico near the oyamel fir forests. After you submit your colored in butterfly to us, you can take a look at our real live monarch caterpillars/butterflies that we rear in the library!
