COSA tour

The Conservation Open Space Area (COSA) is a 24.8 acre wetland and alkali meadow upland located on the Bishop Paiute Reservation. Join Brianda Hernandez Rosales, Water
Quality Program Coordinator for the Bishop Paiute Tribe for a tour of the COSA. Learn about the conservation, research, education and outdoor recreation that the land was intended for.

Join us at the Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library on September 19th from 9:30 am to 3 pm for the 21st Annual Lawson Roberts Butterfly Festival! This event is free and open to the public. 

Learn how we tag Monarch butterflies as we send them off on their journey to Mexico, or challenge yourself to our Monarch Migration game! We will have a butterfly storytime, face painting, a butterfly walk and scavenger hunt, crafts, pollinator friendly seeds, an edible insect station and lots of resources for native gardens and gardening for pollinators! 

For this years Latino Conservation Week, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Library is partnering with the Hispanic Access Foundation to offer a fun and artistic way to learn more about monarch butterflies. Come and design a paper butterfly that will be sent over to a classroom in Mexico near the oyamel fir forests. After you submit your colored in butterfly to us, you can take a look at our real live monarch caterpillars/butterflies that we rear in the library!

The Salinas River Day Celebration is an invitation to connect intimately with the Salinas River through sensorial experience, close observation, and learning through experiences shared by local organizations, artists, and land stewards who advocate for the Salinas River and its surrounding landscape through their ongoing work.

The intention of the event is to invite the community to relate with the Salinas River, immersing themselves in the river’s nature. This event has been held for the past three years during Latino Conservation Week in the Salinas town area. The goal is to spend the day on a field trip that includes different locations along the river. During the field trip participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a day of recreation, art, exploration and reflection on their public lands. They will also learn from experts (from the different organizations that are part of this partnership) about the history, hydrology, ecology, conservation of the Salinas River and alternative forms of river management focused on nature-based solutions, climate adaptation and environmental justice. Participants will also have a chance to connect with others, building alliances and networks for conservation. Through facilitating these connections we hope to support them as partners and community members by offering a meaningful experience.

The events look to showcase the Salinas River as a biological and cultural landscape. We will invite participants to embrace their role as stewards of public lands, protecting and caring for the river. We want to promote connection and stewardship by highlighting the importance of the river as refuge and corridor for wildlife, and also as refuge for people. We would like to foster in the community stewardship of public lands by reconnecting with nature, learning the language of the river, nurturing the land and the culture, and cultivating a sense of belonging, rootedness, sacredness, and reciprocity with the lands along the river.

The field trip is free. All materials, supplies, and food will be covered for participants to eliminate any financial barriers. We will offer a variety of activities that the public will enjoy, including river diaries, water quality tests, bird watching, plant identification, and scientific illustration. We will highlight the history of the river, endangered and charismatic species, and the ongoing work on protection, conservation and restoration of the Salinas River. We will invite participants to partake in ongoing conservation efforts and become river advocates.

These events promote equity and inclusion by ceding intrinsic value to the Salinas River during our session, taking time to listen to what the landscape needs and desires, and advocating for multi species justice. Prior background knowledge of the Salinas river is not a prerequisite to participate meaningfully in these field trips. We hope to encourage the community to cultivate deep and personal relationships with the Salinas River and landscape, reclaiming the right to belong in and envisioning emerging social systems - communities - around the river. These field trips are an invitation for a diversity of cultures, perspectives, and worldviews to take space in the landscape, surrounding dialogue, and narratives.

Come join us and take a guided hike on our Scotler Cove Trail near the Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Schlagle Library. The hike will be led in Spanish and English and will be about a 30-45 minute walk outside.

Colorado River Rafting Trip, September 13, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM

As part of Latino Conservation Week, we’ll be offering two rafting adventure options through Glenwood Canyon on September 13: a calm float, perfect for those who want to enjoy the river and scenery at a relaxed pace, or a more adventurous experience with rapids and a little more excitement. Pick your adventure!

Spanish interpretation will be available, and we’ll have a meal together in Glenwood Springs after the trip. Spots are limited — register soon!

Fishing on Public Lands, September 17–18, 5:00–6:30 PM

In partnership with Garfield County Libraries, join us for a two-part fishing experience designed especially for those who want to learn about the sport and enjoy it in community. On the first day, we’ll learn where, when, and how to fish—from the basics to tips that will help you feel more prepared on the water. On the second day, we’ll put what we’ve learned into practice during a community fishing day at Lions Pond in Rifle, with guidance from instructors and all the equipment you’ll need. No prior experience or personal equipment is necessary. Bring the family if you’d like!

Spanish interpretation will be available, and after our fishing day in Rifle, we’ll share a meal together as a community.

Stewardship Day at Linwood Cemetery /Doc Holiday's Trail 

For the fourth year in a row, RFOV, Defiende Nuestra Tierra, and the City of Glenwood Springs are coming together to celebrate Latino Conservation Week with a fully bilingual conservation day at Linwood Cemetery (Doc Holliday’s Trail).

Join us as we care for this historic site while working together to improve trails, restore the landscape with native seeds and pine straw, remove invasive species, and improve the sustainability of the area. It’s an opportunity to learn, give back, and enjoy our public lands together as a community!

Spanish interpretation will be available, and we’ll share a meal together in Glenwood Springs afterward.

Join us for a fun, family-friendly celebration of Latino Conservation Week! Together with Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, Latino Outdoors, Wilderness Youth Project, and Los Padres Forest Watch, we'll explore the amazing plants, animals, and insects that call our local environment home. This free bilingual and bicultural event is open to all ages and is a great opportunity to connect with nature, learn something new, and spend time with your community. Registration is required as there is a 50-person limit for this event. 

The event takes place at Elings Park in Santa Barbara, where you'll receive a brief lesson on local biodiversity efforts, a nature zine created by the Botanic Garden, and meet 4 local organizations doing conservation work in the region. We'll also take a short, easy walk (about 15 minutes) to a nearby native plant restoration site, where you'll see how restoring local habitats helps birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife thrive. You'll participate in a native seed collection effort and also see how native plants differ from their non-native counterparts. Along the way, you'll discover simple ways we can all help protect the natural places around us. You'll leave the event with your very own native plant to take home and care for!!

Please bring a hat, a reusable water bottle, comfortable walking shoes, and a sense of curiosity. Whether you're new to exploring the outdoors or already love spending time in nature, we look forward to sharing this experience with you and your family.

Coffee and pan-dulce will be served in the morning and burritos from Del Pueblo Cafe will be provided for lunch.

Latinos throughout Central Florida are invited to celebrate Latino Conservation Week with Orange Audubon and partners.

Activities will be constructing bird nest boxes and taking a walk at the Apopka Birding Park, a restoration site located at the entrance to the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive.

Join us as we kick off FPAN's Honrando Nuestra Historia (HNH) with a free community celebration at Mound House! Honrando Nuestra Historia celebrates Florida’s Latine/x heritage and the connections between our communities, history, archaeology, culture, and the natural environment.

In celebration of Latino Conservation Week, this family-friendly event invites visitors to explore local heritage, connect with community organizations, and discover the many ways people and place are connected.

Museum admission will be FREE for the day, with activities and opportunities to explore throughout the event, including:

• Opportunities to meet and connect with local organizations
