Join in on a fireside chat with up and coming Latinx fashion designers, Luma Guarçoni and Elle Barbeito as they discuss their sustainability forward work.
Luma Guarçoni Louzada is a Brazilian fashion designer and researcher from Vitória, Espirito Santo, who has recently graduated from Central Saint Martins in London. In her personal work she is interested in traditional artisanal work, it's creative possibilities and the potential it has to be used as a tool for social change within the production chain of the industry. She is currently presenting her graduate collection 'An Ode to the Gambiarra', which is entirely made using traditional Brazillian artisanal techniques and textiles such as natural latex processed by native communities in Pará; organic cotton, grown, hand spun, naturally dyed and manually woven by women in Minas Gerais; clay beads made by traditional pot makers in Espirito Santo; fish scales hand cut by the women from a fishing colony in Rio Grande do Sul; traditional leatherwork by a saddle maker in Pernambuco and much more. Through 'An Ode to the Gambiarra' Luma hopes to recontextualize marginalized creative practices and materials by exploring them in the space of high luxury and maybe consequently present a new iteration of sustainability and an alternative vision for what fashion could be; an inclusive decolonial tool that works for social progress.

Elle Barbeito is an artist and designer based on the east-coast of the United States. A native of Miami, Florida, her intense process-based work takes on the unforgiving, and often brutal, aspects of the natural environment with industrious sensitivity. Her physical and emotional proximity to the Everglades propelled her into familiarizing herself with the necessary survival skills of hunting, skinning, and preserving skins for leatherwork. The dialogue around this process comes at a necessary time, where creatives should think to blend intention, sustainability, and function within their practice. Barbeito concocts these three elements into a bittersweet visual brew, immersing the viewer in a community defined by a swamp of survival.
