Community Potluck & Filmscreening

Latino Conservation Week is an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and learn how you can help protect our land, water, and air. To celebrate LCW 2019, Coldharbour Institute with the USFS will hold a community potluck and film screenings of “Land, Water y Comunidad” and "Milk & Honey" following with a discussion about public lands surrounding our community and opportunities to recreate. Bring your favorite dish, bug spray and family to enjoy an evening outdoors!

Stewardship Event at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Join Latino Outdoors NYC THIS SUNDAY, July 14th as we combine forces with the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society to help restore the shorelines of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This event is FREE! We'll get to go on a short boat ride, then wade in the water planting marsh grasses to help control erosion. There are 20,000 plugs of grass that need to be planted by the end of the month, so the more helpers, the merrier! It should be fun, so sign up soon! Everyone ages 7 and up is welcome to attend.We will meet shortly before 11:00 am at the headquarters for the American Littoral Society, which you can reach easily via public transit (Take the “A” train to the Broadchannel station):28 W 9th RdFar Rockaway, NY 11693.We plan to wrap up and be back on land by 4pm.Wear comfortable clothes that can get wet and dirty. Bears Ears Service Weekend

Our annual program of volunteer projects and camping on at Bears Ears National Monument is Saturday, July 13th through Tuesday, July 16th. Join our crew for a long weekend working to protect natural and cultural resources on your public lands. We will be surveying cultural sites with Forest Service archeologists and working to protect young aspen trees with Forest Service rangers. Come for a day, two days, or for the full four-day weekend!

Cobs and Bobbers (Part 1 of a series that will bring kids closer to their natural resources)

We are connecting and building positive relationships between urban youth and the local police department by having police officers teach kids how to fish. Along side the fishing, we will have several different stations that will have activities that will encourage kids to go fishing and enjoy nature after the event. Some of the activities include building a "Soda Can Fishing Reel", "Make Your Own Lures", and "Make Your Own Herbarium".

We'll start out with energizing pranayama among the roses where you'll learn a calming breathing technique to utilize in stressful moments outside of class. Then we'll get sweaty (bring a towel!) under a mature tree with a 50 minute power yoga practice that ends with a 10 minute savasana + guided loving-kindness meditation. * Yoga mats optional. BYO child + well-behaved pup friendly. * Modifications offered throughout for you to make this YOUR own practice. *

In an effort to strengthen the ties with the local Hispanic community in Southwest Philadelphia, John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge has invited Escuelita Oscar Romero Summer Camp to visit the refuge. On their visit, the children and chaperones will participate in various activities: 1-mile hike, bird watching, and a crayfish activity.
