"Be a Good Egg" Outreach Event

Since 2013, Audubon New York staff, volunteers, and partners have been working to increase the awareness of and reduce threats to beach-nesting birds by encouraging beach-goers to pledge to “share the shore” with Piping Plovers and other beach-nesting bird species.

During our on-the-beach outreach days, we set up a tent and table at the entrance to heavily-visited Long Island beaches and engage with as many beach-goers as we can to teach about beach-nesting birds. We'll also set up activities and games to further engage our audience. We provide visitors with pamphlets and brochures about beach-nesting bird biology, our conservation work, and information on how to reduce disturbances to birds. Then, we ask visitors to sign our “Be a Good Egg” pledge and therefore agree to keep out of fenced off nesting areas, keep trash off the beach, and keep dogs off of nesting beaches.

Prior to these outreach events, we’ll ask new volunteers to complete a brief online training webinar. Please contact NYcoast@audubon.org for more information and registration to volunteer for this exciting outreach program.

Available Dates and Locations:
July 13th 2019 - Sunken Meadow State Park Kings Park, NY
July 14th 2019 - West Meadow Beach Setauket, NY

All Girls Trail Crew at Mount Rainier, in partnership with Latino Outdoors

The All Girls Trail Crew is open to Latina youth ages 14-18 who live in Washington state. The crew will be spending a week engaging in stewardship and care of Mt. Rainier National Park, while also hiking and camping in this iconic park. Youth participants will be paid a $150 stipend for their work, and are receiving gear donations for future adventures courtesy of MSR and REI.

In 2017 and 2018, the crew built trails, explored rivers and had important and meaningful conversations about diversity in the outdoors. The girls left the program feeling inspired and having contributed over 30 hours of volunteer trail work each. We're looking forward to another great trip in 2019!

CLF: LATINO CONSERVATION WEEK CELEBRATES CONTRIBUTIONS TO STEWARDSHIP

(PUBLIC NEWS SERVICE)
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Latinos are expected to make up nearly a third of the U.S. population by 2050, according to Census projections. So conservation groups want to ensure that Latinos stay engaged in environmental stewardship.

Latino Conservation Week starts this Saturday, and aims to bring these communities outdoors and showcase Latino-led environmental efforts. Polling from Colorado College shows Latinos in Western states overwhelmingly support protections for public lands and wildlife.

But Jenny Brandt, deputy director of conservation programs with the Hispanic Access Foundation, says their contributions to stewardship don’t always get recognition.

“That’s something that we know is a cultural value, but I think is something that isn’t understood overall,” says Brandt. “And so we really want to show that.”

Latino Conservation Week runs through July 22. Environmental groups, churches, and community organizations will host events at public parks, wildlife refuges and other natural areas around the country. Find events online at www.latinoconservationweek.com.

Latinos are often underrepresented in environmental professions, and in visiting public lands. The National Park Service estimates only about one in 10 of its visitors is Latino.

But after four years of growing participation in Latino Conservation Week, Brandt says she’s seen how simply introducing people to the natural resources in their area can make a big difference.

“Once we get a group out to a local park or a local refuge, and they learn about these resources that are really close to them, but that they might not have had knowledge about, they continue to go back to those places and they really become stewards of those places,” says Brandt.

Events in Nevada include a picnic at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park on Sunday, a party hosted by local nonprofits in Las Vegas on Monday, and more. Clark County commissioners, at next week’s meeting, are scheduled to recognize July as Latino Conservation Month.

Music at the Monument!

Music at the Monument is a nonprofit that offers a concert series in our National Parks and Monuments, performing outreach to local communities. The concert series brings an opportunity to improve access for minority populations who use infrequently our National Parks and Monuments, as well as other priority populations (veterans, youth and seniors). The musical jam sessions achieve these goals by featuring musicians that, after performing, spread the word about the meaning of National Parks as they perform throughout the country. In addition, these concerts feature both local and national performing artists that encourage diverse populations to come to the National Mall. During the 2018 concert season, the Music at the Monument concerts will be held in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

On July 20th, stop by the Lincoln Memorial for some SALSA in celebration of Latino Conservation Week! Check out a performance by Salsa with Silvia, and then join in on the fun!
