Únase a Great River Greening en la celebración de la Semana Latina de Conservación en Garlough Park School Forest West St. Paul. En los últimos años, se han llevado a cabo importantes trabajos de restauración del hábitat en Garlough Park con el objetivo de crear bosques nativos y plantaciones de polinizadores para el disfrute del público y los estudiantes de la escuela primaria adyacente. Este evento continuará ese esfuerzo mediante la eliminación de los rebrotes del arbusto invasor y el establecimiento nativo del suelo del bosque mediante la propagación de semillas de pasto. Gracias por marcar la diferencia en conservación mientras disfrutas de un gratificante día en la naturaleza.

Este es un evento familiar. Join Great River Greening in celebrating Latino Conservation Week at Garlough Park School Forest West St. Paul. In recent years, significant habitat restoration work has been carried out in Garlough Park with the aim of creating native forests and pollinator plantations for the enjoyment of the public and students at the adjacent primary school. This event will continue that effort by removing regrowth of the invasive buckthorn and establishing the native forest floor by spreading grass seeds. 

This is a family-friendly event. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we will provide the tools and training required. Volunteers can expect an easy, flat walk from parking/ facilities to work areas.

There will be light snacks and extra water available during the event. Please bring your own reusable water bottle. In addition, bring your work/gardening gloves if you have them, if not they will be provided.

If the event has reached capacity, please add your name to the waitlist and you will be automatically registered if space becomes available. If you are a minor registering yourself, you will need to provide an email address in the "Linked Survey" box so we can send a Youth Liability Waiver to your parent or guardian. If you are an adult bringing a minor, you can add them as an attendee and simply check the "Youth Waiver" box upon registering. If you are an adult registering yourself and another adult, you will need to enter their unique email address to the Attendee registration, so they can confirm their registration and electronically sign their own waivers.

DAY OF:  Please arrive promptly, allowing time for parking and a short walk to check in. When you check-in, you will be oriented to the site and restoration activities.

LOCATION:  Additional details and directions will be sent out in the weeks leading up to the event. Keep an eye out for updates from GivePulse or Great River Greening.

SAFETY: Ensuring the safety of our volunteers is our highest priority. It is important that event participants wear close-toed shoes and long sleeves to protect against ticks and scratchy brush. We recommend dressing for the weather, layers are key. We will hold the event rain or shine.

RELEASE OF LIABILITY:  All volunteers participating in Great River Greening events release Great River Greening and its employees, officers, directors, or agents from any and all liability from claims of any nature whatsoever arising from participation the extent such liability is directly attributable to the negligence of GRG, or its respective employees, officers, directors or agents.

Join us for a day of adventure and community as we celebrate our second event of Latino Conservation Week at Green Valley Falls on Sunday, September 22nd! Learn more about Green Valley Falls here. In addition to exploring the surroundings, ABF will host a community potluck for lunch. Once registered, we will coordinate a potluck and ask everyone to bring a dish to share. About the Field Trip Leaders:
Flor Gomez is a mother and wife and a special educator by profession. Two years ago, her family and she moved to Borrego Springs, and she couldn't resist starting to explore this beautiful park. She loves being surrounded by nature, really enjoys hiking, and watching sunsets. Flor considers herself an extremely friendly person, and she is currently studying English so she can make more friends.

Born and raised between Thermal and the San Fernando Valley in California, Stacy Valdez’s journey is characterized by a blend of academic achievements, professional roles, and a profound dedication to social causes. Stacy has built a diverse and impactful career with a strong foundation in education and a commitment to community engagement and service. They have been involved in humanitarian efforts through Border Kindness since 2018, reflecting their passion for the outdoors, advocacy, language, and cultural studies. Their love for the environment began at an early age, growing once she moved to the San Fernando Valley, where she identified her love for the mountains and hiking and camping. Stacy is dedicated to promoting the outdoors to underserved youth and their communities.

We are pleased to invite you to the first event of a special celebration of Latino Conservation Week! Join us on Sunday, September 15th for an interpretive 3.2-mile hike on the beautiful Harvey Moore to East Side Loop Trail followed by exploration of the Cuyamaca Visitor Center.

8:00 am – Meet at the ABF Administrative Office and drive to trailhead.
9:30 am – Begin hike at Harvey Moore trailhead. Harvey Moore is generally considered an easy route and takes an average of 1 h 24 min to complete. This scenic trail offers stunning views, diverse flora, and the opportunity to spot local wildlife. You can find more information at this link.
11:00 am – Finish Hike and have brown bag lunch at trailhead. Please bring your own lunch and snacks.
11:30 am – Drive to the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Visitor Center.
12:00 pm – Regroup at the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Visitor Center. After the hike, we will explore the Cuyamaca Visitor Center, where we will learn about the local ecosystem, the rich history of the area, and the various recreational opportunities available.
1:00 pm – Drive back to the ABF Administrative Office.

About the Field Trip Leaders:
Lizbeth Bárcena has been camping, hiking, and exploring the Anza-Borrego Desert for over 17 years. Originally from Guadalajara, she grew up in a quiet San Joaquin Valley town in Alta California, halfway between Yosemite and San Francisco. She studied architecture at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and has 20 years of experience working on local and international architectural projects. She splits her time between Los Angeles and Borrego Springs, where she volunteers for organizations in the Colorado and Mojave Deserts. An urbanite by profession but a desert lover at heart, she is dedicated to conserving and preserving our natural environment and bringing awareness of the wonders and fragility of nature through the arts. She is a certified California Naturalist and certified in Regenerative Building. She is a multidisciplinary artist experimenting with clay forms and writing. She is enrolled in a Creative Writing Certificate program at UCLA Extension and is pursuing an MFA in Nature Writing. She is working on her first literary fiction novel set in this desert.

Nos complace invitarte a nuestro primer evento celebrando la Semana de la Conservación Latina. Únete a nosotros el domingo 15 de septiembre para una caminata interpretativa de 3.2 millas en el hermoso sendero Harvey Moore to East Side Loop, seguida de una visita al Centro de Visitantes de Cuyamaca.

Muir Woods National Monument, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), and National Park Service (NPS) welcomes Latino Conservation week with a suite of tabling and programs led by Latino park employees. The day's event offerings include tabling conducted by natural resources and its Latino employees from wildlife biology, vegetation restoration, and aquatics. Additional divisions and employees include interpretation and community outreach. There is a planned easy to moderate guided hike through by Muir Woods park rangers (hike details to be announced soon). Visitors can pick up junior ranger books and earn a junior ranger badge and more Muir Woods specific items.

In addition to connecting Latino visitors to Latinos in conservation, goals for the day include helping bridge visitors to their national monument and providing an understanding of how they can connect to their park and the lessons they can take with them back to their communities.

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week at Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary with free admission on Saturday, September 21. Mexican frozen treats and other food and drink items will be available for purchase in the Blair Visitor Center. With exhibits, artwork, and bird-friendly gardens, the Blair Visitor Center is the gateway to an enchanting wilderness with giant cypress trees that have lived here for nearly 600 years. From there, you can begin your journey on the 2.25-mile boardwalk, meandering through pine flatwood, wet prairie, around a marsh, and finally into the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m., with the last admission at 1 p.m. Reserve your free ticket here: corkscrew.audubon.org/visit

Join us as Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Stewardship (SCMTS) kicks off our Dig Day season with a day of impactful trail work at the stunning Cotoni-Coast Dairies National Monument! This event, held in honor of Latino Conservation Week 2024, is a perfect opportunity to celebrate and honor the contributions of the Latino community in preserving and enjoying our natural spaces.

At SCMTS, we believe that trails are a gateway to the adventure, healing, exercise, and meditation the great outdoors offers. Our work expands and enhances sustainable trail networks so everyone has a place to enjoy and protect the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Under the guidance of our professional trail crew, volunteers will engage in new trail construction and finishing at CCD, ensuring that our trails will be safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you're an experienced trail worker or new to trail stewardship, this event offers a hands-on opportunity to learn new skills, meet like-minded outdoor enthusiasts, and give back to the beautiful landscapes we all cherish.

We are especially excited to be a part of Latino Conservation Week, a time dedicated to encouraging the Latino community to connect with and protect our natural heritage. By participating in this event, you are helping to foster a more inclusive and diverse outdoor community, and ensuring that the Santa Cruz Mountains continue to be a place of adventure, healing, and connection for generations to come.
