Hike Details:

Distance: ~ 2 Miles

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (~200 ft elevation gain)

We'll meet at the Harpers Ferry Visitor Center at 11:00 a.m. and hike until 1:30 p.m.

Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times.

While this event is free, the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park has an entrance fee of $20 per vehicle. If you are interested in carpooling, please email diana.ramos@latinooutdoors.org.

BRING THE FOLLOWING:

• Sunscreen, hat
• Full water bottle
• Sturdy shoes or sandals with straps (FLIP FLOPS ARE NOT ALLOWED)
• Bug repellent (optional)

After registering, please look for a pop up and email from Eventbrite with the link to complete your waiver (this will be through SmartWaiver, not Latino Outdoors). During the week before the event, you will receive another email with more instructions on preparing for the event.

(En español abajo) Join us SATURDAY, JULY 16 for our free, MEGA #LatinoConservationWeek event with The Nature Conservancy NY! Includes FREE ROUND-TRIP TRANSPORTATION between Times Square and Pawling Preserve, trail snacks, a BBQ lunch party, and SWAG!

This is going to be an awesome trip to hike and help repaint trail markers throughout the gorgeous Pawling Preserve just outside of NYC. This is going to be our biggest event yet, so you definitely don’t want to miss out!

Sign up as a group of up to 3-4 people (ages 10 and older) OR join as an individual/smaller group and we’ll make sure to team you up with others joining the fun! DM us or sign up at the Eventbrite link in our bio to register.

We will have multiple trails to enjoy from half a mile to 3 miles. All the terrain is compacted soil with mixed steepness (no more than 945 ft). Each team will be assigned a trail and a guide to hike and trail mark!

Latino Conservation Week is an annual effort by the Hispanic Access Foundation (@hispanicaccess) to help bring the Latinx community into the outdoors through fun, engaging, safe activities that help protect our natural resources. Marking trails is an important conservation practice that allows everyone to enjoy our trails safely, easily, and with confidence. Trail markers help keep hikers on the right path and ensure the surrounding plants and animals are better protected, too!

Happy Latino Conservation Week! Celebrated every July, this week seeks to engage the Latinx community (and everyone) in National Park Service recreational activities and stewardship that benefit their local communities and parks. This week also emphasizes the community’s role in conservation.

On Wednesday, July 20^th, National Parks of Boston, Colonial National Historical Park, and Great Falls Park are excited to present a day-long Latino Conservation Week Webinar. This Conservation Webinar will feature presentations from employees and volunteers working for the National Park Service at sites located across the country. Join us as we learn about different conservation issues that we face today through the Latinx perspective.

An event that will be an introduction to the Corn Creek visitor center and trails. We will have a meet and greet inside the visitor center where the participants will get the chance to explore the exhibits and ask any questions relating to the information provided. Participants may ask for any of the information to be translated or interpreted in Spanish so that everyone can enjoy the visitor center. The event will also provide sweet bread and coffee, other drinks will be provided as an alternative to the coffee for kids.

After everyone has gotten the chance to eat and explore the visitor center, there will be a short guided hike that will touch on 3 prominent features on the trails. The short guided hike is a simple introduction to the trails, in hopes that the participants come recreate on their own in the future with family and friends. Once the guided hike is completed, the participants will return to the visitor center where they can ask for any additional information. The event will have a table that provides more information on other public lands in the Las Vegas area so that they have different options. The participants will be free to go after all this but will be welcomed back in hopes that they pass along their experiences with families and friends. The ultimate end goal will be seeing a higher representation of Latinos recreating on public lands but specifically at Corn Creek Visitor Center.

Campfire at NIX for Latino Conservation Week When: Saturday, July 23, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Where: 1745 Hoffman Mill Road

Program Description: Spend a cozy evening by the campfire, complete with stories for Latino Conservation Week and s’mores! These programs are suitable for all ages. This program is free and all are welcome. This program is offered partially in Spanish. Celebrate the stories and contributions of Latinos to conservation and the outdoors. Explore the many ways to connect to nature in Northern Colorado.

Directions: Nix Farm (Natural Areas Office), 1745 Hoffman Mill Road Go north on Lemay from Riverside and turn right on Poudre River Drive (about ½ block north of Riverside). This is located between two medical buildings. After about 1 block, the Poudre River Drive ends and you will see a paved road to your right which is Hoffman Mill Road. Stay on this paved road for almost a mile (past the crushing facility). The road ends at our offices.

Accessibility: Program takes place in a paved campfire ring and is wheelchair accessible. Accessible restrooms available. Bring water to drink and a blanket or chair. Audubon Florida's Rosa Rivera will sit down with Melissa Murillo of the Peregrine Fund, Rafael J. Araujo of the University of Miami's Department of Marine Biology and Ecology, and Elizabeth Lago of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to discuss their spark birds, flight paths, and thoughts for the future.

Join us for a FREE community boating day at FDR Park! Explore three connected bodies of water -- Pattison Lagoon, Edgewood Lake, and Hollander Creek -- while observing an array of wildlife and beautiful views of the park and city skyline. Kayaks and rowboats will be available for 45 minute time slots between 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Sign ups are done on the spot on a first-come, first-serve basis (no pre-registration required). No gear or kayaking experience necessary- kayaking equipment and instruction provided by professional kayaking instructors from Discovery Pathways. Meet at the FDR Park Boathouse.

Patuxent Wildlife Research Refuge Center will celebrate Latino Conservation Week with free activities on Saturday July 16th, 2022 at the National Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel, MD 20708. Activities are intended to be conducive to an inclusive environment geared towards promoting initiatives to provide families with nearby outdoor recreation opportunities and to demonstrate the surrounding diverse communities' commitment to conservation.

Activities will take place from 9am – 2pm. Youth aged 5 – 15 are invited to fish with their families. Instructions and equipment will be provided and a license is not required. Advance registration is required for fishing. The Eventbrite link for registering for the fishing activity is:

Other activities on July 16 include live bird program(s), kids’ crafts, monarch butterfly presentation, a display of the 2022 Junior Duck Stamp Contest Entries, trails to explore, and more. Hispanic Access Foundation (HAF) intern, Clara Hernandez, will present on HAF’s My Access to Network Opportunities (MANO) Project and her experiences as an intern at Patuxent Wildlife Research Refuge.
