#LCW2021 Photo Contest

WHEN: 

Photo Contest begins July 17, 2021, and ends July 25, 2021 at 11:59 PM Pacific. Voting will occur July 27-30, 2021 and winners will be announced on July 31, 2021. 

WHO MAY PARTICIPATE:

All people are welcome to participate, regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, ability, language, and nationality.  

WHAT TO ENTER:

Photos may be submitted under each of the following categories, which are drawn from subjects of special interest to Latino Outdoors’ participation in Latino Conservation Week 2021:

  1. RETHINK OUTSIDE: Photos that help redefine what it means to be “outdoorsy”. Share portraits and photos of people engaging with the natural environment and purposeful activities which provide stress relief, promote well-being, build confidence, and offer health benefits to individuals and communities alike. 
  2. CONSERVATION CULTURA: Photos that illustrate how conservation is woven into the fabric of Latinx culture. Use photography to highlight cultural elements not found in the mainstream conservation narrative with a particular focus on the intersection of the Latinx identity and the natural environment.
  3. THE LATINX EXPERIENCE: Photos that contribute to a better representation of all Latinx people, history, and heritage.

HOW TO ENTER:

Each participant may submit up to three photographs per category using this form. Please complete one form per photo and include a Photo Release Form. Photographs may also be submitted as Instagram posts by tagging @latinooutdoors and indicating the contest category in the caption of the IG post (Rethink Outside, Conservation Cultura, or The Latinx Experience). Photos must capture people outdoors locally, either participating in outdoor recreation or conservation efforts. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Follow @LatinoConservationWeek
  • Use the following hashtags #LatinoConservationWeek / #LCW2021 / #LCWPhotoContest
  • Practice social distancing and be safe (see #RecreateResponsibly guidelines mentioned above)
  • Include a land acknowledgement. Put some effort into learning the history of the location you’re in. Google and the Native Lands app/website could be helpful for research.
  • Answer the question “What does conservation cultura mean to you?” in the photo/post caption.

LO SF Bay Area | Nature Hike at The Presidio

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week 2021 with Latino Outdoors: SF Bay Area and the Presidio Trust for a nature hike at The Presidio. Join us on a two-mile moderate hike in the Presidio! We will hike on several of the park’s major trails, which feature striking views and beautiful landscapes. Please wear sturdy hiking shoes, dress in layers, and bring a picnic lunch to carry with you and water! Latino Outdoors will be providing snacks.

This hike is free and will occur rain or shine.

What Latino Outdoors expects from participants: We take safety at our community outings very seriously. We ask participants to self-certify that they do not have symptoms, have not been diagnosed with or had direct contact with a known or suspected COVID-19 case in the past 14 days, and will comply with LO’s safety policies and procedures. Together, we can ensure safe, positive, and meaningful experiences in nature.

El Buen Pastor Hiking Trip

Put on your hiking boots and join the community of Compton, ILLC-El Buen Pas-tor Bookstore! This special educational hiking event is for us to enjoy. The day will include exploring a hiking trail and the opportunity to visit points of interest in the San Gabriel Mountains, located at 1750 N. Altadena Dr., Pasadena Ca. 91107


We are inviting youth (13-18) years old and parents to participate this summer on a hiking trip from Eaton Canyon Park to the San Gabriel Mountains. We will hike to Henninger Flats Campground - a 3 mile hike.

The bus will leave from El Buen Pastor Bookstore at 6:30 am PT and return by 4:30 pm PT.

Kayak on the Lake

Join Montgomery Parks and Latino Outdoors for an hour exploring the beautiful 75-acre Lake Needwood in a rental kayak. Look for wildlife, meet other outdoor enthusiasts, or just enjoy a peaceful paddle. Kayakers of all levels are welcome! 

Kayak, paddle, and life jacket provided. Water-friendly clothing and hat, strap-on water sandals or shoes (no flip-flops, please) recommended.  Arrive 30 minutes before your timeslot.  Participants must be at least 12 years old. Those aged 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult in a tandem or nearby kayak. Ages 16 and up can kayak independently.

Family Fishing Fun

Enjoy a morning fishing at Little Seneca Lake.  We’ll show you how to set up a simple bobber rig, bait your hook, and give you some tips on casting.  All experience levels are welcome. 

The bait and rigging supplies will be provided, you just need to catch the fish! We have fishing poles you can borrow, but if you have your own, please bring it along so you can practice with your own gear. 

Each family member that plans to fish must register. All registrants 16 and over must have a current Maryland fishing license. Meet at the pontoon boat dock by the Black Hill boat rentals.

STORYWALK®: ¡Olinguito, de la Aa la Zz!

Families are invited to read ¡Olinguito, de la Aa la Zz! on posted signs while strolling through Wheaton Local Park. With lyrical text in both Spanish and English, the book, written by Lulu Delacre, explores the magical world of a cloud forest in the Andes of Ecuador.  Discover the bounty of plants, animals, and other organisms that live there and help a zoologist look for the elusive olinguito.  The ¡Olinguito, de la Aa la Zz! StoryWalk® presented by the Noyes Children’s Library Foundation in collaboration with Montgomery County Public Libraries and Montgomery Parks will be available for self-guided exploration from Saturday, July 17, 2021, through Sunday, August 15, 2021, at  Wheaton Local Park. StoryWalk® is a registered trademark of Anne Ferguson

Cleanup Your Neighborhood or Local National Forest

Help Hispanic Access Foundation celebrate Latino Conservation Week by cleaning up your neighborhood or local national forest. Pick up trash anytime between July 17th-25th. If participants wish to receive an appreciation package please email Belen.Coronado@usda.gov a photo of your cleanup along with your address. Encourage others to participate by uploading a picture on Instagram using the hashtags #LCWCleanup, #LCW2021, and#LatinoConservationWeek.

Latino Conservation Week Celebration

Mark your calendars! #LatinoConservationWeek is happening from July 17th - July 25th this summer and we can't wait to celebrate.
LCW is an annual initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation celebrating outdoor engagement & conservation advocacy by Latino communities across the country and we are excited to bring it to Hackettstown.
From nature discovery walks to gardening classes and fishing activities for children and adults, these activities promote conservation efforts in our community and provide an opportunity for Latinxs to show their support for permanently protecting our land, water, and air.
