Movie Screening of “Estamos Aqui” and Community Conversation on the Cultural Connection of Hispanics to the Land, with light refreshments provided.

Estamos Aqui! We are here! The Latino population is the fastest growing American demographic. They are also among the most under-represented groups in conservation, outdoor recreation, and environmental education organizations. What are the causes and consequences of this divide? What are the challenges and opportunities? In this feature-length documentary film we will uncover and celebrate the often little-known but beautiful and vibrant Latino heritage for conservation and outdoor recreation. Latino families and individuals from all over the United States are already connecting with their history, their culture, their communities and the planet through powerful, meaningful and culturally relevant interactions with nature. In Estamos Aqui we will meet these inspiring people, hear their stories and discover how our connection to nature simultaneously makes us unique and brings us together.

Morning Hike and Storytelling

Latinos have a strong connection to nature, but often times everyday responsibilities don’t allow us to get outdoors. For this year’s Latino Conservation Week, the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada wants to invite you to change that. Bring your family and join us on an early morning hike where you can share stories about the importance of preserving our planet and how we can encourage our community to enjoy the outdoors more often. We will have snacks for the trail!

Environmental Impacts in our Communities

The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada partnered up with the University of Nevada Reno to research the impacts that environmental degradation has on working families, Indigenous peoples, and communities of color. We will have a panel discussion with people that participated in this project and present our initial findings. We think it is important to continue this conversation with communities that are being impacted and what better time than Latino Conservation Week.

There will be Spanish translation.
