Camino latino map launching hike

Our hope with this map is to help people connect with the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valley’s incredible public lands. Public lands are owned by a government agency (like Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, or the US Forest Service) and available for everyone to visit and enjoy. They are part of what makes where we live so special!

All of the places we’ve identified are ones you can visit with your whole family. The “Legend” on each map tells you other important information - what kind of activities you can do, if the site has a bathroom, etc. If you need camping or other outdoor gear, we encourage you to visit the XXX or XXX Gear Library, where you can borrow gear and test it out before you decided to purchase anything.

When you visit these special places, be sure to remember they’re home to all sorts of animals: bears, birds, fish, insects, and many more! Treat both the land you’re visiting and the animals with respect - plan ahead and prepare for your visit, always dispose of your waste properly, and take only photos. This ensures these special places will be around for many years to come.

Finally, a big thank you to all of our sponsors and partners (listed above) for making Camino Latino possible. I hope to see you outside!

CHEC's Acceso Especial al Parque

Celebrate Latino Conservation Week with us at the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center!

We will kick things off with the Florida Public Archeology Network as Natalie A. De La Torre Salas presents: Weeds and Seeds: A History of Dining in Southern Florida - Cattle, citrus, and many other common foods today were brought to Florida by the Spanish, so what were people eating before then? This talk covers what people would have had for dinner in Southwest Florida 2,000 years ago. Topics of environment, flora and fauna, archaeological research, and historical documents all come together to answer this question.

Following the presentation, participants will enjoy a brief walk up to CHEC's visitor center to gain special access as the center is typically closed during the summer months. At the center, enjoy interacting and learning more about the animal ambassadors that live there, browse the gift shop and ice cream selections, explore educational exhibits, and more! This portion of the program will be presented in English and translated into Spanish.

Latino Community Beautification Block Party

On July 15, 2023, MTC will host its Hispanic Heritage Community Beautification Block Party to promote the successful efforts of tree plantation and environmental exposure through partnership with the NJ Tree Foundation. After engaging in a grass-roots two-year projects that empowered residents to organize and make environmental decisions in their neighborhood, MTC planted over 10 trees in its most predominantly Latino community. The block party will not only promote cultural engagement among all Latinos but promote residents' access to tree plantation through onsite planter boxes, flowerpots and representatives from the NJ Tree Foundation. In addition, the block party will host cultural entertainment, food and raffle basket prizes.

The event is free and open to all ages.

From Spring 2021 to Spring 2023, Movimiento Tricolor (MTC) has partnered with the New Jersey (NJ) Tree Foundation to support beautification and environmental exposure to Hispanic communities throughout Camden, New Jersey. With Camden residents fighting against pollution and illegal dumping in a city where high poverty levels exist and over 50% of residents are Hispanic, MTC partnered with the NJ Tree Foundation to combat environmental racism through the plantation of trees. The project has consisted of organizing residents, empowering them to make decisions about tree plant choices and hosting an event where neighbors and volunteers planted over 10 trees themselves. Currently the project is in its final stages partnering with a local artist, Stephanie Rodriguez, who is leading a group of Rutgers University-Camden students to paint the planter boxes for the trees previously planted. The block party will represent the culmination of the project by showcasing the trees donated by the NJ Tree Foundation, planter boxes painted by local university students and will provide information on how residents can conduct a similar project while honoring the Latino community through cultural music, performances and food. On-site services and resources from local environmental and social services organizations will also be on-site to promote social and economic development in the community.

Pollinator Monitoring for Community Science

Great River Greening is Minnesota's leader in nature based climate solutions through land restoration. Our mission is to inspire, engage and lead local communities in conserving and caring for the lands and waters that enrich our lives.

During Latino Conservation Week, GRG will host an event at Crosby Farm park in St. Paul. Attendees will learn techniques to identify native bees and record their findings in Community Science databases such as  iNaturalist or Bumblebee Watch.

In coordination with the University of Minnesota Bee Lab and the Xerces Society, Great River Greening (GRG) is piloting more accessible ways for community scientists to measure what pollinators can be seen at a site. Two methods we will teach attendees are the 3-Category (3CAT) monitoring protocol and to use the iNaturalist app. The 3CAT and iNaturalist app are accessible to anyone who can go out to a park or place where plants are in bloom. Both involve minimal training (no species level ID skills required), doesn’t require permits (any capture and release in the metro requires incidental take permits). The 3CAT does not require the use of technology whereas the iNaturalist app requires a smart phone or computer. The idea of the 3-Category Monitoring protocol is that a person can go out to an area, walk around for 30 minutes, and tally the numbers of organisms they see in three categories – honeybees, native bees, and “other pollinators”. This type of participatory science provides crucial information about the pollinator populations in an area, as well as introduces conservation topics and engaging information the participants can take with them after the event.

Some pollinators of interest, Monarch Butterflies in particular, migrate from Minnesota/northern North America to Central and South America. The valuable organisms we are studying do not have borders and the conservation of these organisms is of equal concern to all people around the world. Many of these species are now very rare, and depend on this type of local, community engagement for their survival.
