July 25 - 27: Gila River Outing
On Friday, July 25, Hispanic Access Foundation, in partnership with the Diocese of Las Cruces, will take 16 youth from Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church and Holy Cross Catholic Church camping and hiking along the the Gila River to explore the site of a proposed diversion project and learn about how local wildlife would be impacted. Bishop Oscar Cantú, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces, will travel with the youth on Friday, join them for the hike and celebrate a mass on Saturday.
The A.T.O.M.I.C. (All Together Missionaries in Christ) youth group from the Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church, first visited the Gila River last October, 2013 and went on to advocate for its protection at a New Mexico State Senate hearing and in a meeting with the New Mexico Governor\'s office. The youth invited Bishop Cantú to learn about the Gila River and support their efforts to protect it by joining them on this outing.
